Empowering the Next Generation: Essential Life Skills for Today's Youth

Cape Town, 12 July 2024 – In today's rapidly evolving world, academic knowledge alone is not enough for our youth to thrive. The complexities of the digital age, the interconnectedness of global societies and the demands of future careers require a diverse set of life skills. These essential life skills are crucial for personal growth, responsible citizenship and success in both careers and family life. As parents, we have the incredible responsibility and opportunity to cultivate these skills in our children from a young age.

FREE Edugraphic and New Online Course

To commemorate Youth Skills Day on 15 July, we are excited to announce the creation of a colourful Edugraphic (educational infographic) illustrating the twelve essential youth skills. This Edugraphic is available for free download on the Get Up and Grow website.

In addition, we are launching a new online course designed specifically for parents. This course will provide practical strategies, tools and activities to help parents teach their children these essential life skills:

1. Information Literacy – Accessing, assessing, and analysing information effectively.

2. Agility and Adaptability – Developing resilience and cognitive flexibility.

3. Collaboration and Leadership – Building teamwork and leadership skills.

4. Effective Communication – Mastering clear and confident communication.

5. Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving – Navigating complex challenges.

6. Curiosity and Love for Learning – Fostering a lifelong passion for learning.

7. Digital Literacy – Navigating technology responsibly.

8. Executive Function and Planning – Developing strong planning and organising skills.

9. Financial Literacy – Managing finances responsibly.

10. Global Citizenship – Understanding and engaging in global issues.

11. Initiative and Entrepreneurship – Encouraging creativity and entrepreneurial thinking.

12. Emotional Intelligence – Developing self-awareness and empathy.

Why These Skills Matter

The skills we nurture in our youth today will shape the leaders, innovators and responsible citizens of tomorrow. By equipping our children with these skills, we empower them to navigate challenges, embrace opportunities and contribute positively to society.
