On 25 June at around 18:46, a suspect posing as a customer entered a retail food business in Rustenburg and tried to buy food using fraudulent R200 bank notes.
Fidelity ADT Reaction Officer Peter Beleng responded to call on Nelson Mandela drive in Rustenburg CBD. On arrival the Store manager informed him that one of the customers bought food twice using false R200 notes. The Manager noticed that the money was false when she tried to put the money into the drop safe, and the money was not accepted.
Following procedure, Officer Beleng reported this to the control room and requested back-up to be dispatched. When back-up Officer Mosothwane arrived, both officers approached the suspect and managed to apprehend him. They searched him and found more false money, a knife and Mercedes Benz keys in his possession.
The suspect was handed over to Rustenburg SAPS.
Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Marketing & Communication for Fidelity ADT says the manager’s adherence to security procedures and quick thinking led to the arrest of the suspect. “I commend the manager for thinking quickly and notifying us of this crime. Fraud is a very real issue that we face in South Africa and we are pleased one less fraudster is on the streets,” she says.
