Arm Your Alarm – Even if Just for 30 Minutes
Written by: Jacqui Save to InstapaperRecent break-ins in the Bloemfontein area have once again served as a reminder to residents to arm their alarms when they leave the house. In the past two weeks, there have been four house break-ins where it was found that the alarm system was not armed.
Fidelity ADT urges residents to remain vigilant and ensure their alarms are armed when going out of their homes, even for a quick errand. Leaving your alarm unarmed presents an opportunity for criminals.
“What concerns us is that many people don’t arm their alarm systems when they leave home, and we sometimes even come across properties where gates are left open,” says Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Marketing & Communication for Fidelity ADT.
The Importance of Perimeter Security
Perimeter security is the first layer of defence, including your alarm. Like a vehicle, to ensure it functions properly, it needs to be serviced regularly. The same applies to your alarm system, which must be tested regularly to ensure it's working at all times. The entire perimeter of the property should also be checked frequently for weaknesses.
Security Tips from Fidelity ADT
- Arm your alarm even if you are at home.
- Arm your alarm whenever you leave your home, even if for just 30 minutes, and when you go to bed.
- Test your alarm regularly to ensure it is working.
- Teach your children and domestic workers how to use your alarm system.
- Close windows and check that all doors are locked when you leave home.
- Secure your perimeter at all times.
- Activate outdoor detection systems.
- Lock all garden, leisure, and other equipment away when not in use.
- Be extra vigilant when leaving and arriving home. If you notice anything or anyone suspicious, do not turn into your driveway.
- Never allow strangers onto your property, regardless of their stated purpose. Ensure your domestic staff are aware of this rule.
- Carry a remote panic button at all times when you're at home and equip your domestic staff with panic buttons.
Report anything suspicious to the SAPS or your security provider immediately.
