Smash-and-Grabs on the Rise in Bryanston

Submitted by: Jacqui

Fidelity ADT has flagged vehicle-related incidents as a growing cause of concern, particularly in the Bryanston and Sandton areas.

Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Marketing & Communications for Fidelity ADT, highlighted key intersections where these incidents are frequent, including William Nicol, Grosvenor, and Main Road, as well as Peter Place and Main Road in Sandton. In one alarming case, a motorist encountered two men armed with a firearm at around 19:30 at the Peter Place and Main Road intersection. Fortunately, the driver had enough space to escape the situation. In the past three days alone, there have been three reported incidents.

"As we approach the festive season, we expect to see more opportunistic crimes," Hattingh said. She emphasised that even in busy intersections, motorists should not assume they are safe. "Motorists are reminded to remain vigilant at all times."

Key Safety Tips for Motorists

  • Keep your boot locked to prevent criminals from easily accessing it while in traffic.
  • Store valuables in the boot, including handbags, laptops, and sports bags.
  • Avoid using your phone at intersections and stay alert.
  • Lock all doors and do not open windows or doors for strangers.
  • Avoid engaging with street vendors or people handing out flyers.
  • Be cautious of pedestrians near intersections.
  • If you encounter obstacles such as rocks or tyres, do not exit your vehicle. Instead, reverse and drive away.
  • Maintain a gap between you and the car ahead, allowing room to escape if necessary.

“If you are involved in an incident, remain calm. Don’t resist or become aggressive—surrendering your belongings, like a handbag or phone, could save your life,” Hattingh advised. She stressed the importance of reporting incidents to the police as soon as possible, as SAPS relies on intelligence to monitor crime hotspots.
