Start Ticking Off Your Home Security To-Do List Ahead of December

Submitted by: Jacqui

Many of us are eagerly counting down the weeks to our December vacation, marking off each passing day on the calendar. The much-anticipated December 10—or perhaps even earlier—is approaching quickly. However, amidst all the excitement of planning for your trip and some well-deserved relaxation, have you considered your home security?

Charnel Hattingh, Fidelity ADT’s Group Head of Marketing and Communications, offers a timely reminder that criminals are also watching for homeowners to pack up and leave for extended periods. To ensure a stress-free holiday, now is the time to start ticking off your home security checklist.

“There’s plenty to consider if you want to relax without worrying about your home. The earlier you start preparing, the better,” says Hattingh.

Fidelity ADT’s 8-Step Action Plan:

  1. Test Your Security Systems
Ensure all your home security solutions are functioning properly—alarm systems, battery backups, outdoor beams, electric fencing, CCTV cameras, and fire alarm systems. A quick call to your 24/7 security provider can confirm if everything is in working order. If any issues arise, schedule repairs well before the festive season, when service technicians are at their busiest.

  2. Check for Vulnerabilities
Inspect for any weak points in your security, such as overgrown foliage affecting your electric fence or structures that could provide footholds for intruders.

  3. Improve Lighting
Ensure your outdoor lighting is effective, and consider installing sensor lights in key areas. Adequate lighting can deter criminals by putting them in the spotlight.

  4. Notify Your Security Provider and Neighbours
Inform your security company of your travel dates, and let a trusted neighbour know too, so they can keep an eye on your property.

  5. Consider a Guarding Service
Hiring a casual guard can provide an extra layer of protection, ensuring someone is on-site with the added support of armed response services.

  6. Strengthen Your Perimeter
Evaluate whether additional security measures, like an electric fence linked to constant surveillance, are necessary.

  7. Secure Windows and Doors
Check that all latches and locks are functioning properly, and ensure even small windows are protected. Modern, aesthetically pleasing security options such as electronic sensors and invisible beams are available if traditional burglar bars aren't appealing.

  8. Book Your Pet Sitter
Dogs are great early-warning systems and can deter intruders. Make sure your pets are well cared for while you're away, so they can continue guarding your home.

Real-Time Monitoring for Peace of Mind

Hattingh also highlights the benefits of real-time monitoring systems. With smart residential security services like SecureHome, homeowners can monitor their property from anywhere, using their smartphones to arm or disarm alarms, check security statuses, and receive alerts.

“You can even ward off potential intruders with active deterrents like flashing lights and sirens before they reach your property,” she adds.

To avoid last-minute stress, Hattingh advises getting started on your home security preparations as soon as possible. Leaving everything until the last minute may result in overlooked details, adding unnecessary anxiety to your holiday preparations.

“Make your festive season memorable for the right reasons, with the peace of mind that your home is fully protected when you head off for your well-deserved break.”
