Cable theft, primarily stolen for scrap metal, is an aggravating problem for many businesses and residents around Gauteng.
Last night at approximately 21:25 Fidelity ADT reaction officers Thendo Nemalili and Thabiso Shabalala successfully apprehended a suspect in Wierda Park.
Officers Nemalili and Shabalala were patrolling in the area when they were stopped by a member of the community informing that they had seen three suspects cutting cables down the road..
The officers immediately drove to the corner of Theuns van Niekerk and Uvongo street; approaching slowly they caught the suspects red handed. Unfortunately the suspects saw the Fidelity ADT vehicle and fled the scene in a bakkie driving to an engen garage nearby. One of the suspects was left behind and Officer Nemalili managed to apprehend him. A big black plastic bag filled with rolled electric cable and a jigsaw was found in his possession. On further investigation the suspect confirmed that they were stealing cables in the Weirda Park area and that he was employed by the escaped the suspects.
Tshwane SAPS, CPF members were also on the scene. The suspect was handed over to Wierdabrug SAPS
Leon Muller, District Manager for Fidelity ADT says, I commend the community member who informed our officers of the criminal activity and did not intervene. Not only is there a serious impact on the community but cable theft can injure or even kill those tampering with the cables and even endanger the public.
“Well done to our officers. We do not recommend residents intervene in any way but rather report any suspicious behaviour to their Local SAPS department. This is a serious criminal offense and offenders will be arrested immediately,” says Muller.
