Add R2.50 to Your Ster-Kinekor Movie Ticket to Improve Eye Care Across South Africa
When we have good eyesight, we often take it for granted, but losing it can be life-altering. National Eye Care Awareness Month in October highlights the importance of eye health, especially in preventing and treating avoidable blindness.
In line with this, Ster-Kinekor’s Vision Mission CSI programme encourages moviegoers to make a difference by adding R2.50 or more to their cinema ticket purchase. "Sight and vision are critical to consuming our product," says Lynne Wylie, Chief Marketing Officer of Ster-Kinekor. "This connection inspired our Vision Mission programme, which supports communities through eye care initiatives."
Transforming Lives Through Vision Mission
Early detection and treatment of eye issues can change lives. Every eye test and pair of spectacles donated through Vision Mission can significantly impact a child’s future. “Providing spectacles helps children excel at school, on the sports field, and in social situations,” Wylie adds.
Generous contributions from Ster-Kinekor patrons have funded eye examinations, spectacles, and even corneal transplants for children. Since the programme’s inception, Vision Mission has reached over 364,784 underprivileged students, with almost 30% receiving further optometric care. More than 16,480 people have been given glasses, and 33 young people have undergone successful corneal transplants.
The Global Challenge of Childhood Blindness
Globally, three-quarters of the world's 1.4 million blind children live in developing countries, including South Africa. Blindness in these children often leads to social isolation and educational disadvantages. For every blind child, three others have severe vision impairment, and 13 need eyeglasses. Around 17 million children worldwide experience low or blurred vision without access to visual aids.
A Call to Action
With 75% of blindness cases being preventable, having regular eye tests is crucial. However, for many South Africans, yearly eye exams are inaccessible. Vision Mission aims to provide essential eye care to as many young people as possible, relying on the ongoing support of Ster-Kinekor customers.
"We are grateful to everyone who has donated to Vision Mission," Wylie says. "Your generosity brings the #GiftOfSight to those in need. If you’ve ever skipped the 'Donate to Vision Mission' button while buying movie tickets, consider clicking it next time. Your donation can brighten a young person’s future."
