Written by: Janet de Kretser Save to Instapaper

This October, Ster-Kinekor invites movie lovers to step back in time with its popular Throwback Cinema series, a month-long celebration of classy classics brought back to the big screen. Each film screens for one week only, from Friday to Thursday, and tickets are just R50, giving movie lovers the perfect opportunity to watch timeless stories in the way they were meant to be seen… on the big screen.

Throwback Cinema is our way of giving audiences the chance to experience – or re-experience – some of the world’s most memorable films on our screens,” says Lynne Wylie, Ster-Kinekor’s chief marketing officer.

“Each month’s titles offer a wonderful mix of genres, ensuring there is something for everyone – and at only R50 a ticket, it’s an affordable night out at the movies. Whether you’re revisiting an old favourite or watching a classic for the first time, Throwback Cinema promises nostalgia, big-screen magic, and great entertainment value.”

The line-up for October features a mix of magical adventures, iconic romances, thrilling suspense, and edge-of-your-seat action.

Starting off the month is a wonderful animation classic for the whole family – and perfect for the school holidays. First released in 1992, Aladdin rides onto the big screen from 03 October. Cinema audiences of all ages are invited to enter a whole new world with Disney’s enchanting, animated masterpiece.

In the boorish city of Agrabah, kind-hearted street urchin Aladdin and Princess Jasmine fall in love, although she can only marry a prince. He and the power-hungry Grand Vizier Jafar vie for a magic lamp that can fulfil their wishes. Follow the journey of street-smart Aladdin, the spirited Princess Jasmine, and the hilarious Genie in a dazzling adventure filled with unforgettable songs and heartwarming moments.

A special screening of the timeless 1968 biopic Funny Girl will also be released on 03 October, but only at Rosebank Nouveau in Johannesburg. The film follows the life of Fanny Brice, a popular and influential American 1930s comedienne, singer, theatre and film actress, from her early days in the Jewish slums of New York, to the height of her career with the Ziegfeld Follies, as well as her marriage to the rakish gambler Nick Arnstein. The film stars Barbra Streisand, who won the Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Fanny Brice, and Omar Sharif in the title roles, alongside Kay Medford, Anne Francis and Walter Pidgeon in this Wiliam Wyler directed film.

Another ‘funny girl’ is Meg Ryan. Anyone who remembers the 1989 romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally will always remember the iconic line, “I’ll have what she’s having!”. Releasing on 10 October, this witty and charming romantic comedy asks the ultimate question: can men and women ever just be friends? Starring Billy Crystal opposite Meg Ryan, this classic is filled with sharp humour, unforgettable moments, and one of the most iconic scenes in film history. Harry and Sally have known each other for years, and are very good friends, but they fear sex would ruin the friendship. The film is directed by Rob Reiner and also stars Carrie Fisher.

What would Throwback Cinema be without a classic 007 film thrown into the mix for good measure? Releasing on 17 October, Bond, James Bond, is back in one of the most thrilling instalments of the 007 franchise in the 2012 action-packed Skyfall. Daniel Craig stars in this stylish and adrenalin-filled adventure where loyalty is tested, secrets are revealed, and he must confront his past to save MI6. A must for Bond fans.

Onto something far more sinister from 24 October when the chilling psychological thriller that has become a landmark in cinema history releases on the big screen. In The Silence of the Lambs, Jodie Foster stars as FBI trainee Clarice Starling, who seeks the help of the brilliant but terrifying Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) to track down a serial killer. Directed by Jonathan Demme, this 1991 psychological drama is gripping, haunting, and unforgettable.

Ending off the month of October on a much lighter note is a charming romantic comedy about finding connections in unexpected places and falling in love all over again. The 1998 feel-good movie, You’ve Got Mail, releases on 31 October. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan light up the screen as business rivals who unknowingly fall for each other online in this delightful 90s classic. Book superstore magnate Joe Fox and independent book shop owner Kathleen Kelly connect in the anonymity of the Internet, both blissfully unaware that he's trying to put her out of business. The film is directed by Nora Ephron, and also stars Greg Kinnear, Parker Posey and Jean Stapleton.
