School is out for the October break, and there’s no better way to spend quality time with family and friends than enjoying a fun movie on the big screen. Ster-Kinekor is inviting you to spend a few hours together, sharing a line-up of fun, adventure, and animated magic – and, of course, these are best enjoyed in the colourful Kids’ Cinemas.

While all the kids' movies will be playing in select cinemas across the country, the younger kids will love the experience of enjoying the film in the fun-filled Kids’ Cinema spaces that feature their own foyer area with activity tables and catering counter, brightly coloured beanbag seats (with bigger seats at the back!), and a slide and ball pool. The Kids’ Cinemas can be found at Ster-Kinekor Sandton City, Fourways Mall, Carnival City and Irene in Gauteng, and at Blue Route, V&A Waterfront and Capegate in Cape Town.

The school holiday movie line-up is packed with exciting titles for kids and families alike. First up is the delightful Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie, where younger audiences are invited to step into the purr-fectly playful world of Gabby and her cat-tastic friends in this all-new adventure that’s bursting with colour, fun, and friendship. Follow Gabby as she heads out on a road trip with her Grandma Gigi to the urban wonderland of Cat Francisco. But when Gabby's dollhouse, her most prized possession, ends up in the hands of an eccentric cat lady named Vera, Gabby sets off on an adventure through the real world to get the Gabby Cats back together and save the dollhouse before it's too late.

Added to the excitement around the release of the film is the chance to meet the movie’s characters and step into Gabby’s magical world during the Gabby’s Dollhouse Costume Tour, visiting select Ster-Kinekor cinemas across the country:

07 October – 10:30 – 13:30 at Sandton City Mall; 15:00 – 18:00 at Eastgate Mall - JHB

09 October – 10:30 – 13:30 at The Grove Mall; 15:00 – 18:00 at Irene Village Mall - Tshwane

12 October – 11:00 – 16:00 at Mall of Africa, Midrand

16 October – 11:00 – 16:00 at I’langa Mall, Mbombela

18 October – 10:00 – 15:00 at Mall of the North, Polokwane; and

19 October – 10:00 – 15:00 at Secunda Mall, Secunda

Gabby fans will have the chance to meet their favourite characters in their colourful costumes, pose for photos and enjoy a ‘cat-tastic’ experience together!

Other holiday movies on offer include the hilarious animated antics of Chickenhare and the Secret of the Groundhog. Chickenhare embarks on an epic quest to find a mysterious groundhog with the power to reverse time and save his species. His adventure takes a dangerous turn when his group discovers they are not the only ones searching for this ancient power. Join this brave bunny-bird on his journey packed with heart, humour, and high-flying antics.

Or, why not join The Bad Guys 2, the world’s most charming band of reformed villains who are back for another round of mischief and mayhem, and plenty of laughs for the whole family. The now-reformed Bad Guys are trying to be good but instead find themselves hijacked into a high-stakes, globe-trotting heist, masterminded by a new team of criminals they never saw coming: The Bad Girls.

For the older kids and anime fans, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba Infinity Castle (PG13) brings action, courage, and stunning visuals to the big screen. And, for this week only till 09 October, playing out on the biggest IMAX screens, Avatar fans can enjoy the re-release of Avatar: The Way of Water (PG13). Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, here we follow the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

You can also relive the magic of Disney’s beloved animated classic, Aladdin, as it returns to the big screen for one week only till 09 October, with tickets at just R50 each as part of Ster-Kinekor’s Throwback Cinema promotion.

Releasing on 10 October is the anime, Doraemon the Movie: Nobita’s Art World Tales (PG7-9). The story is set in the magnificent medieval European world depicted through masterpieces of art. Doraemon and his friends dive into the 'world of pictures' and enjoy a great adventure in this original story that is a treat for the imagination (Japanese with English subtitles).

So, whether you’re meeting Gabby, watching your favourite animated heroes come to life, or simply enjoying the cool comfort of the Kids’ Cinema together, Ster-Kinekor’s big screen experience is your family’s go-to destination this school holiday.

Younger cinemagoers can also make the most of the loyalty programmes on offer for great value, with free movies until 19:00 for under-18s who are Discovery Vitality members, while The Epic Deal for SK Club members (free sign-up) gets you a movie ticket, drink and popcorn for just R149,90 between Mondays and Fridays.

And, if it’s your birthday during the holidays, why not invite your friends to a party with a difference at your favourite Ster-Kinekor cinema? Ster-Kinekor offers the perfect venue to host your party, special ticket prices and you get to watch a cool movie with your besties.

About Ster-Kinekor Theatres

Ster-Kinekor Theatres is the largest movie exhibitor on the African continent. To most South Africans, the word ‘movies’ is synonymous with the name ‘Ster-Kinekor’. The company operates 33 commercial cinema complexes in South Africa that house 255 large-scale screens, with 33,951 seats and the largest 3D footprint featuring over 100 state-of-the-art 3D screens in South Africa (Commercial, 3D, IMAX, Kids Cinema, Cine Prestige, and DBox). It also operates four cinema complexes in Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia, with 23 screens and 3,014 seats.

As the industry leader, Ster-Kinekor has pioneered cinema concepts such as Cinema Nouveau, a dedicated art-house multiplex cinema, and the luxurious Cine Prestige theatres, the first ‘business class’ cinema experience in South Africa; and has headed the return of the IMAX® Experience, with eight IMAX® Theatres across the country. Ster-Kinekor has expanded its cinema innovation to launch the first Kids’ Cinema complete with slides and bean bag seating (currently six screens) as well as D-BOX which brings movie experiences to life with motion seats. Most recently, Ster-Kinekor introduced SKX-PERIENCE Powered by Jozi X at The Zone in Rosebank, an indoor adventure hub offering axe throwing, gel blaster, splatter room and escape rooms, adding a new dimension to the Ster-Kinekor entertainment experience.

As one of South Africa’s most loved brands, it is Ster-Kinekor’s ongoing mission to become synonymous with the unrivalled magic of the cinema experience, by providing ‘Great Moments at Their Greatest’. During 2013, the company embarked on a massive roll-out project to convert and equip every cinema with the very latest in digital projection and sound technology. The result of this upgrade is that every cinema now boasts state-of-the-art cinema technology that encompasses 2K and 4K digital projection and 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound systems.

The SK Club loyalty programme rewards members with redeemable points when they swipe their card when buying movie tickets or catering, as well as half-price tickets on Tuesdays. Combined with industry-leading loyalty programmes from Edgars Club and Discovery Vitality, these give Ster-Kinekor a strong consumer value proposition and competitive advantage. Ster-Kinekor has extended its loyalty offering to include the first subscription model in South Africa: SK Subscription Club, which offers members a limited or unlimited number of movies per month at a set cost whilst also enjoying the benefits of SK Club.

As the market leader, Ster-Kinekor aims to spearhead the advancement of cinema across both South Africa and the rest of Africa, to ensure that consumers continue to experience movies as they were made to be seen – on the big screen.
