OMODA & JAECOO’s SHS hybrid models address South African driving needs
Written by: Press Release Save to Instapaper
- With up to 150 km pure electric range and low fuel consumption, SHS plug-in hybrids offer a practical alternative to full EVs where charging infrastructure remains limited.
- OMODA & JAECOO’s Super Hybrid System combines a high-efficiency engine, advanced hybrid transmission, and smart energy management to deliver electric-first driving without sacrificing power or range.
- Global testing across 16 countries shows over 1,200 km total range, strong performance (up to 440 kW / 915 N.m), and reliable efficiency in extreme conditions.
OMODA & JAECOO are redefining the future of hybrid mobility with industry-leading SHS (Super Hybrid System) technology. By combining exceptional energy efficiency, long-range performance, and robust power delivery, SHS sets a new benchmark for hybrid vehicles, elevating hybrid technology from a transitional solution to a mainstream mobility choice for global users.
SHS: Redefining hybrid efficiency
The SHS (Super Hybrid System) represents a comprehensive breakthrough in hybrid technology. Rather than excelling in isolated parameters, SHS delivers true system-wide synergy by optimising the interaction between a hybrid-exclusive high-efficiency engine, a dedicated DHT hybrid transmission, and a high-performance battery pack.
Key features include :
- High thermal efficiency engine: Achieving 44.5% thermal efficiency, among the highest in its class.
- EV-mode transmission efficiency: Up to 98.5%, enabling smooth, electric-first driving during everyday urban commuting.
- Smart energy management: Intelligent coordination of electric and petrol power ensures consistent acceleration alongside low energy consumption.
This “electricity-led, gasoline-assisted” operating logic eliminates the traditional compromise between performance and efficiency, delivering a refined, responsive driving experience across real-world conditions.
Global validation: SHS performance
OMODA & JAECOO’s plug-in hybrid SHS models have undergone extensive real-world testing across 16 countries, including Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America. These trials move beyond laboratory figures, proving the global adaptability, durability, and reliability of SHS technology.
- 1,200 km+ WLTP comprehensive range: Real-world testing exceeded official figures, recording 1,353 km in the UK, 1,427.5 km in Southeast Asia, and an impressive 1,613.1 km in Mexico.
- Urban and long-distance efficiency: Fuel consumption as low as 6L/100 km in extended-range mode, combined with a pure electric range of up to 90 km in the J7 SHS, ideal for daily commuting.
- Strong power output: The combined output of electric motors and combustion engine delivers impressive performance, with the C9 SHS producing 440 kW and 915 N.m of torque, achieving 0–100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds.
- Proven reliability in extreme conditions: Tested in high temperatures (up to 57°C), extreme cold (as low as -20°C), mountainous terrain, and high-altitude environments, SHS consistently maintained performance and efficiency.
OMODA & JAECOO SHS model lineup
OMODA & JAECOO’s expanding hybrid and plug-in hybrid range is designed to offer eco-conscious customers a wide variety of options, catering to different budgets and mobility needs.
Last year saw the launch of the C9 SHS and J7 SHS, both powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine. The C9 SHS features a tri-motor electric setup, delivering a formidable 440 kW and 915 N.m of torque, along with an impressive claimed driving range of up to 1,100 km. The J7 SHS offers 255 kW and 525 N.m, matching the output of the C7 SHS.
Despite their strong performance credentials, all models deliver exceptional efficiency and electric driving capability. The C9 SHS offers up to 150 km of pure electric range with a discharged fuel consumption of just 6.9L/100 km, while the C7 SHS achieves 105 km (4.9L/100 km) and the J7 SHS delivers 90 km (4.7L/100 km).
In the coming months, the range will expand further with the introduction of the C5 and J5 hybrids, both capable of returning 5.3L/100 km while reaching 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds. Additional details will be announced soon.
“While fully electric vehicles can still be challenging to own in South Africa due to charging infrastructure and long-distance travel demands, plug-in hybrids and hybrids offer the best of both worlds,” commented Shannon Gahagan, National Brand and Marketing Manager for OMODA & JAECOO South Africa.
“With SHS technology, our PHEVs deliver up to 150 km of pure electric driving for daily commuting, while the addition of an efficient internal combustion engine makes longer trips effortless, practical, and worry-free. It’s a solution perfectly suited to the realities of South African driving, combining electric convenience with the freedom to travel anywhere, anytime,” added Gahagan.
