JAECOO J7 tops UK new car sales charts as South African momentum builds
Written by: Press Release Save to Instapaper
The JAECOO J7 was the UK’s best-selling passenger car in March 2026, with more than 10,000 units sold in a market traditionally dominated by established legacy brands.
The result marks a significant shift in consumer perception, with the J7 outperforming its nearest competitor by 70% and emerging as the UK’s best-selling vehicle year-to-date.
The milestone has strong relevance for South Africa, where the J7 has built solid momentum since its local launch in April 2024, supported by growing demand for the J7 SHS plug-in hybrid.
JAECOO J7 Tops UK Sales Charts
The JAECOO J7 has become the best-selling passenger car in the United Kingdom for March 2026, marking a breakthrough in one of the world’s most competitive and traditionally brand-loyal automotive markets.
In a market long dominated by established legacy manufacturers, the rapid rise of the J7 signals a meaningful shift in consumer perception.
A recently introduced Chinese crossover has surged to the top of the sales charts within months of its market launch, challenging long-held assumptions about brand hierarchy and customer preferences.
According to figures from the UK’s Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), 10,064 J7 units were sold in March alone, with 15,703 units sold year-to-date.
The model also outperformed its nearest competitor by 70% during the month, underlining the scale of its impact in a highly contested segment.
This achievement follows a steady build in momentum, with the J7 consistently ranking among the UK’s top ten best-selling vehicles since late 2025.
Strong demand across both private and fleet buyers has driven this performance, supported by a product offering that combines advanced powertrain technology with everyday usability.
The electrified J7 SHS (Super Hybrid System) plug-in hybrid has played a significant role in this uptake.
Industry Response To The J7’s Success
“These sales numbers are a defining moment for JAECOO,” said Shannon Gahagan, National Brand and Marketing Manager for the OMODA & JAECOO and iCAUR brands.
“Achieving the number one position in a market like the UK, where customer expectations are exceptionally high, and brand loyalty is deeply entrenched, speaks to the strength of the J7 as a product and the growing confidence in a new generation of automotive brands.”
Beyond its commercial success, the J7’s performance reflects a broader shift taking place across the global automotive industry.
Consumers are increasingly prioritising innovation, technology and value, and are more open than ever to considering new entrants that deliver on these fronts.
The J7’s rise in the UK is a clear indication that perceptions are evolving, particularly when it comes to vehicles from China, which are rapidly establishing themselves as credible, competitive offerings on the global stage.
Strong Momentum In South Africa
For South Africa, where the automotive market is equally dynamic and value-conscious, this milestone carries particular relevance.
As local consumers continue to explore new options in the SUV segment, global indicators such as this provide important validation.
Local sales figures for the J7 remain strong; as the second vehicle to launch under the Brand OJ umbrella, the J7 has achieved combined sales of 4,184 units since its introduction in April 2024.
This has only been helped by the arrival of the J7 SHS last year, which has a combined range of more than 1,200 km on a single tank, courtesy of the plug-in hybrid technology.
Since its introduction in June 2025, 445 J7 SHS models have been sold locally, accounting for more than 10% of all J7 sales in South Africa.
