Trailers still being targeted in Westrand – Fidelity ADT urges residents to be vigilant
Written by: Jacqui Save to InstapaperFidelity ADT urges Westrand residents to be vigilant.
Over the past month, there have been at least 12 reported incidents in the Westrand specifically in Witpoortjie, Helderkruin and Roodekrans where trailers are being stolen
Fanie Loots Branch Manager for Fidelity ADT urges residents to be extra vigilant about their security especially as we approach the festive season. “We have noticed a developing trend where suspects are stealing trailers from properties, mostly at night time. They are targeting all size trailers. In the majority of incidents, suspects gain access by lifting gates.
He offers the following safety tips:
Install outside lights that can be remotely controlled from inside the house.
Consider installing lighting outside which is activated by a motion detector.
Reduce all heavy foliage near your perimeter wall and gate to reduce the possibility of those spots being used as hiding places.
Make sure that your alarms are in working order and are set.
Ensure that your gate motor is secured in a steel casing or bracket, which is locked at all, times.
Suspects often just place their hands through the gate if your gate motor is unsecured and installed right next to a “palisade-type” gate”.
They are then able to switch the gate to manual and access your property
Install adequate anti-lift brackets and welding a piece of flat bar onto the gate rack to prevent thieves from bending the rack upwards.
Combine mechanical anti-theft systems, such as traditional theft-resistant cages, with electronic notification devices, for example sound bombs and GSM units, which are able to send notifications to users when the device’s inputs are triggered Install beams that cover your gate area
“We really want residents to take this seriously as there have been a number of incidents. Please do a thorough check of your perimeter security and call on the experts for help if need be,” concludes Loots.
