As artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT rapidly enter corporate environments, many South African organisations are moving beyond curiosity and beginning to focus on responsible and practical workplace adoption.
While AI tools can significantly improve productivity, experts warn that businesses must understand the technology’s limitations before integrating it into daily operations.
Corporate training provider College Africa Group (CAG) reports a growing demand from organisations seeking practical guidance on how employees can use AI tools safely, effectively and responsibly.
Arnold Muscat, Director of College Africa Group, commented:
“Artificial intelligence can dramatically improve workplace productivity, but organisations must understand a critical principle — AI produces language, not truth.
AI systems generate text that sounds confident and convincing, but the information still needs to be verified by humans.
Employees must apply judgment, check facts and remain accountable for decisions.”
Many companies initially experimented with AI informally, but organisations are now recognising that training and governance are essential before AI tools are used widely within the workplace.
Common workplace applications currently emerging include:
- Drafting professional emails and communication• Summarising lengthy reports and documents• Preparing meeting notes and structured action lists• Assisting with research and information gathering• Improving document clarity and structure
However, without proper training, companies risk employees relying on AI outputs without verifying the information.
Muscat added:“Prompting is a skill. When employees learn how to give clear, structured instructions to AI tools, the quality of the output improves significantly.
But organisations must ensure employees understand the limitations of AI and always apply human oversight.
To support organisations navigating this transition, College Africa Group has expanded its training portfolio with practical programmes designed specifically for corporate environments.
These include:
AI in the Workplace – A governance-focused course covering responsible AI use, workplace policies and key considerations, including data privacy and POPIA compliance.
ChatGPT in Business – A practical hands-on programme that teaches employees how to structure prompts effectively and use AI tools productively in everyday business tasks.
Industry observers believe organisations that combine AI technology with proper training and clear policies will gain significant productivity advantages.
As artificial intelligence continues to reshape how businesses operate, experts suggest that the most successful organisations will be those that adopt AI carefully, responsibly and with well-trained employees.
