AI Produces Answers. Excel Helps Validate Them.

Businesses across South Africa are investing in artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot. The promise is simple. Save time. Improve productivity. Reduce administration.
The technology is impressive. AI can draft emails, summarise meetings, create reports and analyse information in seconds.
But a growing number of organisations are asking a different question. Are employees becoming more productive, or simply faster at producing content?
Creating reports more quickly does not automatically create business value. The real value comes from making better decisions, improving customer service and reducing mistakes. This is where human judgement still matters.
AI can generate language. It cannot understand your business the way your employees do. It does not know your customers, your priorities or the consequences of a poor decision.
AI can suggest. People must verify.
The Importance Of Human Judgement
This is especially important when AI is used with spreadsheets, reporting and business data. An AI-generated formula or summary may look convincing while still containing errors.
That is one reason many organisations continue to invest in Advanced Excel Training alongside AI initiatives. Excel remains one of the most effective tools for validating information, checking calculations and testing assumptions.
"Many organisations are measuring AI activity rather than AI value," says Arnold Muscat, Director of College Africa Group. "Creating more reports does not automatically improve business performance. The real question is whether better decisions are being made."
AI Value Versus AI Activity
Businesses are also investing in ChatGPT for Business programmes to help employees understand where AI adds value and where human review is still required.
"AI can generate a formula, a report or a summary in seconds," says Muscat. "That does not mean the output is correct. Employees still need to validate information and apply professional judgement."
Microsoft Copilot is creating similar opportunities. Used correctly, it can help employees work faster, analyse information and improve productivity.
However, organisations must also ensure that data access, governance and business processes are properly managed.
Combining AI Training With Validation Skills
As a result, many organisations are combining Microsoft Copilot Training, ChatGPT for Business and Advanced Excel Training to help employees use AI effectively while maintaining accuracy and accountability.
The future workplace is unlikely to be AI replacing people. The future is AI working alongside people who can analyse information, validate results and apply professional judgement.
As organisations adopt tools such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, the need for analytical thinking, data validation and Excel skills continues to grow.
"AI may produce the first answer," says Muscat. "Excel helps validate the answer. People remain responsible for the final decision."
