MG is officially back South Africa
Submitted by: Ian DickinsonThe iconic car brand, MG, is back in South Africa with a bang. The first models into South Africa are its MG 6 range, which consist of the 1.8 Fastback and 1.8 Saloon styles in the Comfort, Luxury and De-Lux models.
Combined Motor Holdings (CMH) is the sole importer and distributor in South Africa with 10 dealerships opened around the country.
History
MG is the abbreviation of Morris Garages, named after the father of MG ‘William Morris’. Morris was born in Worcester in the UK in 1877 and the first Morris car was built in 1913. After WWI Morris introduced the batch production system into his company and the first car to be built in the Cowley Factory was in 1922.
Cecil Kimber joined the company in 1921 as a sales manager. By 1924 he was the general manager and had begun to modify the characteristics of Morris cars into sports cars. MG has a huge racing history, much of which is owed to Kimber and his passion for racing.
Owner Location
The Shanghai Automotive Industrial Corporation (SAIC) has bought MG and it is being built in Shanghai but the iconic MG factory in Longbridge, England remains its manufacturing plant so its engineering is all British.
The MG 6
The MG 6 is not a sports car in the true sense of the history of MG – it is a four-door saloon or fastback that moves in as a challenger in the same segment with Corolla, Jetta, Focus and similar brands.
MG is distributed locally through Combined Motor Holdings (CMH) as a standalone brand, MG South Africa trading as Morris Garages (which is what the MG stands for).
With 10 dealers up and running and several more due to start service during the year, MG South Africa is also set to launch additional models as they become available.
The svelte style, which somehow manages a fine balance of Euro sensibility, suggests that future MG’s will possess style and competitive engineering.
The MG 6 is essentially a new car for MG and its 1.8 engine is an upgraded, turbocharged dream.
