Drivers Prepare to Drive Responsibly Over the Festive Period
Submitted by: JoziWith the festive season in full swing, South Africa's roads are set to see a significant increase in traffic. Dunlop Tyres SA calls on drivers to embrace the "Four Ps" of road safety: Planning, Preparation, Patience, and Performance, to ensure a safer festive season for all.
Road Safety: A Critical Priority
"South Africa’s festive December season is a joyous time for visiting family and friends, but it also brings heightened risks on our roads," said Lubin Ozoux, CEO of Dunlop Tyres SA. "We urge all drivers to take responsibility for their safety and the safety of others."
The South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) has forecasted peak daily traffic volumes of up to 90,000 vehicles on major routes like the N3, N2, and N1. With increased risks such as speeding, drunken driving, and unroadworthy vehicles, Dunlop emphasises the importance of responsible driving.
The Four Ps of Road Safety
1. Planning
- Check weather forecasts and plan trips to avoid hazardous conditions.
- Opt for safe, reliable routes, avoiding high-traffic areas.
- Ensure emergency contacts are accessible, and backup measures like Dunlop Sure tyre insurance are in place.
- Pack essentials: spare tyre, jack, torch, first aid kit, and water.
2. Preparation
- Inspect oil, coolant, brake fluid, and transmission fluid levels.
- Check battery health and all vehicle lights.
- Ensure tyres meet the 1.6mm tread depth requirement and inspect for damage.
- Verify your spare tyre is ready for use.
3. Patience
- Drive calmly, avoiding aggressive behaviour.
- Maintain safe following distances and obey speed limits, especially in residential areas.
- Stay alert in congested traffic and unpredictable weather conditions.
4. Performance
- Know your vehicle’s limits and adapt to road conditions.
- Consult Dunlop retailers for expert advice on suitable tyres for your route.
- Ensure your vehicle is in optimal condition for the journey ahead.
A Shared Responsibility for Safer Roads
"By preparing well ahead of your trip and performing the necessary checks, you can ensure the safety of yourself, your loved ones, and others on the road," Ozoux added. "This festive season, let’s prioritise road safety to create a joyful and safe experience for all."
