High Temperatures and Snakes - Steps to Take to Stay Safe
Submitted by: JoziResidents of Durban and surrounding areas are advised to stay vigilant during the festive season as soaring December temperatures awaken the region’s snake population. According to expert snake catcher Nick Evans, being informed and prepared is key to safely navigating potential encounters.
Understanding Snake Activity
Hot weather often increases snake activity, with sightings already reported in areas like Westville and the greater Durban region. This time of year is particularly significant as pregnant Black Mambas and Mozambique Spitting Cobras become more active. While these species are notorious, other venomous snakes such as Rhombic Night Adders, Vine Snakes, and Stiletto Snakes also inhabit the region. Fortunately, many commonly encountered snakes, like Spotted Bush Snakes, Brown House Snakes, and Herald Snakes, are harmless.
Educating Communities
Nick Evans, through his KZN Amphibian & Reptile Conservation Initiative, focuses on public education to dispel myths about snakes and promote safety. His work includes rescuing not only snakes but also endangered species like the Durban Dwarf Burrowing Skink and KwaZulu Dwarf Chameleon.
"Educating the public is crucial, especially during summer," says Evans. He regularly conducts educational talks in northern communities and remote areas, a task made easier by sponsorship from Dunlop Westville, who provided him with durable Grandtrek tyres for his bakkie.
Snake Safety Tips
Evans provides the following advice to minimise risks and respond safely to snake encounters:
- Leave it alone: Do not try to catch or kill the snake, as this increases the risk of being bitten.
- Avoid scaring or hurting it: Move away slowly to avoid provoking a defensive reaction.
- Call a professional: If you know the snake is venomous, contact a snake catcher.
- Take a photo if safe: From a safe distance (4m+), take a photo to help identify the snake. If unsure, snake catchers can provide guidance based on the photo or description.
- Watch the snake: If you call for help, keep an eye on the snake to prevent it from disappearing.
- Protect pets: Keep dogs, in particular, away from the snake, as they are likely to attack it, increasing the risk of injury.
