Dunlop Hands Over New Classrooms to Ladysmith School
Submitted by: JoziIn a heartwarming development for Ithubelihle Special Opportunity School in uMnambithi (formerly Ladysmith), Dunlop Tyres SA has handed over a brand-new classroom block just in time for the school’s 2024 academic year. The new facility includes two classrooms, a principal’s office, and a sick bay, providing much-needed space and resources to support the school’s special-needs learners. The project, valued at R1 240 000, was completed one year after being announced during Dunlop’s 50th anniversary celebration of its manufacturing plant.
Lubin Ozoux, CEO of Dunlop Tyres SA, expressed the company’s dedication to empowering youth through education:
"At Dunlop, we're committed to supporting skills development and education, particularly for special-needs learners in the uMnambithi community. Ithubelihle’s mission to provide specialised education is vital, and we're proud to help them grow and continue to empower young people. Education is key to unlocking job opportunities and addressing South Africa’s unemployment challenges."
Ithubelihle's Inspiring Journey
Founded by Headmistress Sibongile Tshabalala, Ithubelihle Special Opportunity School was born out of her personal experience with her son’s struggle to access mainstream education due to dyslexia. Over the years, the school has grown from operating in rented spaces to becoming a respected educational facility in the region, offering holistic education to learners aged 5-18. The new facilities will allow the school to expand its curriculum, which includes Basic English, Mathematics, Computer Literacy, Visual Arts, Beadwork, and more.
Tshabalala shared her gratitude for the donation:
"Dunlop’s generosity is a godsend. This new block will enrich our learners' education, providing a nurturing environment where they can thrive and develop independence. As we celebrate World Teachers Day this month, we are reminded that we are all teachers in some way, playing a role in developing children with special needs."
A Meaningful Collaboration
Joanne de Freitas, PR and Events Manager at Dunlop Tyres SA, reflected on the partnership:
"Working with Headmistress Tshabalala and her learners has been an inspiring journey for us at Dunlop. The dedication of the teachers and the eagerness of the students have motivated us every step of the way. It has been an honour to see the tangible impact this project has had on the school community and to witness their heartfelt gratitude."
With these new facilities, Ithubelihle Special Opportunity School is well-equipped to continue its mission of empowering special-needs learners, providing them with the skills and confidence to build independent futures.
