Sumitomo Rubber Industries Expands Dunlop Tyres' Global Footprint
Dunlop Tyres is poised for significant global growth following Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd. (SRI)'s acquisition of the DUNLOP trademark and associated rights for four-wheel tyres in Europe, North America, and Oceania. This strategic acquisition from The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company marks a pivotal step in the brand's global expansion.
A Historic Acquisition
On 8 January 2025, SRI signed a $526 million (approximately R10 billion) purchase agreement, granting the company the ability to operate its tyre business under the DUNLOP brand worldwide. This move solidifies Dunlop’s presence in nearly every global market, enhancing its reputation as a leading name in the tyre industry.
Commitment to Growth and Excellence
Lubin Ozoux, CEO of Dunlop Tyres South Africa, expressed his enthusiasm:“We are extremely excited about this development at SRI, as it reaffirms their commitment to the Dunlop brand. SRI’s investment strengthens Dunlop’s legacy of performance, reliability, and cutting-edge technology. This acquisition, coupled with SRI’s recent multibillion-rand investment in our uMnambithi (Ladysmith) plant, underscores a shared vision to enhance manufacturing capabilities for premium Sport, SUV, and 4x4 tyres tailored for African and international markets.”
A Legacy of Innovation
Founded in 1888 by John Boyd Dunlop, Dunlop revolutionised the tyre industry with the invention of the pneumatic tyre. Over 137 years later, the brand remains a trusted name, now bolstered by the precision and engineering excellence of its parent company, SRI.
This acquisition highlights Dunlop's unwavering commitment to innovation, quality, and expanding its influence across global markets.
