What does it take to hear and be heard in the workplace?

Published: 12 March 2018

Approximately 15% of the world’s population has some degree of hearing loss, as recognized by the World Health Organisation, WHO. In Sub-Saharan Africa, slight impairment (defined a 26-40 dB) tracked at just over 14% (1). Fostering a corporate climate which promotes the inclusion of differently-abled workers into the workplace, which can include the right environment and equipment to support workers considered hard of hearing, is not only a compliance requirement in many countries across the world, but in some circumstances can also help to improve productivity.

Noise has always had the potential to distract people from the task at hand. Today, changes in the workplace have introduced new levels of noise that were absent just a few years ago. Effective noise management is now a business imperative that extends from inside the office walls to anywhere work happens.

Noise management in the office begins with acoustics. The first step is to look over the workplace to determine what can be done acoustically to improve the environment. Consider where different groups of workers are located, and assess whether each group’s communications needs are helped or hindered by their specific location. Where noise is a problem, the following best practices has the potential to enhance acoustic performance, whatever the office environment:

Best Practices to Consider:

  • Specialized materials on floors, walls and ceilings minimize noise. For example, covering bare floors with carpeting is an essential step for reducing noise.
  • Vertical barriers limit sound travel across an open-plan office. Consider placing divider panels between affected areas.
  • Computer-generated sounds mask unwanted noise. Many companies pipe in background noise, or allow people to listen to music to block sound.
  • Introduce headsets to block out background noise wherever it occurs and help users enjoy higher quality communications.

Plantronics headset technologies build on the noise protection provided by other acoustic best practices and our headsets are backed by extensive development and testing facilities, plus over 50 years of audio engineering experience. The Plantronics range offers a variety of headset technologies, including:

  • Noise cancellation: Plantronics achieves optimum results using active and passive noise cancellation at both the transmission point (what you hear) and reception point (how you sound).
  • Digital signal processing (DSP): DSP in Plantronics headsets produces a more natural voice sound by applying specialized algorithms to digitized voice signals.
  • Sidetone: This feature provides out-of-band feedback in real time to let people know how they sound to the listener or listeners on a call.
  • Microphone array: Using multiple microphones in a single device delivers exceptional sound clarity.
  • Hearing protection: Plantronics SoundGuard technology helps to ensure that loud tones are quickly reduced to more comfortable levels, using a sophisticated three-stage process to protect users from sudden increases in sound levels.

Current industry trends are driving the need for improved noise management. Covering calls from desk phones, PCs and mobile devices, Plantronics offers a range of corded and wireless audio solutions that enhance the audio experience for business customers. 100% black woman owned digital agency Stilt Media are disrupting South Africa’s marketing industry – using data to create real results

Published: 26 February 2018

Gauteng based digital marketing agency Stilt Media are making waves as one of the few completely black women owned and led agencies in the current South African marketing and advertising landscape. The agency is already disrupting the typical client/agency relationship by using technology and data to add real value and return on investment to clients’ bottom lines.

Founded in 2015, Stilt Media headed up by Marketing Director Mimi Mphaphuli and Managing Director Tina Manyanya. Both women come from impressive leadership and management backgrounds, with Manyanya having headed up her own department at Publicis Media and Mphaphuli having lead a department at Ogilvy.

The pair decided to start up Stilt Media after noticing a gap in the current digital marketing environment in terms of service and delivery. They aim to use their unique backgrounds to create better processes and build better strategies to boost clients from an operational and business development point of view.
So what makes Stilt Media different?

“To start with, we believe in the power of technology and data and how it can be used to add measurable value,” says Manyanya. “We’re used to seeing the scenario where a client comes to an agency with a bunch of cash and tells them to run a campaign without having an understanding of what they agency is going to do and why. We want to use the data, analytics and tools at our disposal to demystify what we do, so clients can see that everything we recommend is from a strategic point of view. We don’t want to waste the client’s money.”

“So many South African agencies just take their client’s funding and rely on automated tools to do the heavy lifting for their social media and search campaigns,” adds Mphaphuli. “We’d rather dig deep into the data, so we can understand how to constantly better optimise our campaigns.”
“We’re very interested in where technology is going and in investing in tools that can help make things easier and more affordable for our clients. Whether it’s more efficient reporting tools or more efficient programmatic processes, we’re always looking at ways to get more insights without cutting corners.”
The pair acknowledge that the current advertising industry has a reputation for a lack of transparency, and hope to build trust through becoming strategic partners to their clients – and not just another agency.

“We understand that the industry has for a very long time operated without transparency and clients have been kept from seeing where their money is going and how it’s being spent. What we are doing is telling them what the work we’re doing will do to their bottom line,” says Manyanya.
“We are interested in being strategic partners and taking things beyond a typical client agency relationship. We’re asking ourselves, ‘how can we assist you and partner with you to help your business grow holistically?’”
Stilt Media also believes in fostering the next generation of black, female digital marketing leaders, and have created a paid internship program to facilitate this.

“Having both grown up in agency environments, we understand what the typical internship can be like,” says Mphaphuli. “We don’t just want to give them meaningless jobs to do. We want them to understand the thinking behind what we do and take ownership of it. We want to encourage a spirit of entrepreneurship.”
Stilt Media is currently taking on clients across verticals, and already has partnered with several major South African agencies as well as clients in the technology, automotive, financial and entertainment sectors.

Plantronics Tech Tip - Active and Passive Noise Canceling

Published: 19 February 2018

WHY DO YOU NEED GOOD PASSIVE HEADSET DESIGN COMBINED WITH ACTIVE NOISE CANCELING (ANC) TO ACHIEVE OPTIMAL NOISE CANCELING PERFORMANCE?

Passive Noise Reduction
Any stereo headset or headphone will provide some level of passive noise reduction. In fact, any device that provides a physical barrier to your ear canal will limit your exposure to noise. Industrial noise canceling headphones fit over the ear and are specially constructed to maximize noise filtering. They are packed with layers of high-density foam or other sound-absorbing material, which makes them heavier than other headphones but reduces the background noise by about 15 to 20 dB. This level of noise reduction is essential in workplaces with extreme noise levels, such as airport ground crew areas or factories. Not every work environment requires that level of noise canceling, however. For office workers, a more lightweight, over-the-ear or in-the-ear headset typically provides the required passive noise reduction more comfortably.

Active Noise Canceling (ANC)
Beyond passive noise canceling, which involves physically blocking sound, ANC is a technology built into many of our products that further enhances the user experience. This technology uses additional microphones on the back of each speaker that respond well to low-frequency (80 to 700 Hz) background noise.
These microphones pick up the background noise, feed it into the ANC circuitry, invert it, then direct it into the same audio path. This happens very quickly, <500 milliseconds, which is not perceptible to the user.
The result? The original background noise and the inverted noise cancel each other, leaving just the audio the user wants to hear.

WHY ARE THERE TWO LEVELS OF ANC ON VOYAGER 8200 UC (MID AND HIGH)?
The Voyager 8200 UC features two levels of ANC. The first one, “mid,” is set at a similar level to the Voyager Focus UC, optimized for typical office noise. The second level “high,” is about double the intensity of the mid level. The high-level ANC is very useful for noisier environments, such as airports or coffee shops, but may be fatiguing for long periods of use in an office environment depending on how sensitive the user is to the effects of ANC. The option to adjust ANC intensity settings allows users to choose their own individual comfort level.

Wherever you work, noise can be distracting. So whether you’re in an open office or on a crowded flight, taking calls or listening to music, the boomless Voyager 8200 UC Bluetooth® headset with active noise canceling lets you focus on what’s important, in comfort and style. Hear music and conversations with complete clarity. All tones, from high to low and everything in between, sound full and natural. Need to tune out distractions? The hi-fi stereo sound and dual-mode active noise canceling cut background noise while the dual-paired microphones keep the focus on your voice. Information about ANC and the Voyager 8200 UC is available at www.plantronics.com/za or by contacting a local South African authorized distributor.

Help your customers understand why workplace noise affects productivity and profitability. And how they can fix it.

Published: 12 February 2018

64% of employees agree blocking out noise increases their productivity.(1)

Today, work happens everywhere — in busy open-plan offices and contact centers, at home, even coffee shops. This flexibility is great for business and people, but with it comes a new challenge: noise. Distraction caused by noise reduces productivity and well-being and, in contact centers, detracts from a positive customer experience.

Studies show that it takes 23 minutes to recover from distraction(3) and over 58% of employees are distracted multiple times each day.(2) That represents a significant impact on your customers’ businesses you can easily help avert through proven noise reduction strategies and products.

Managing Noise: In the Contact Center

In the contact center, noise remains the biggest complaint among employees(4) and can negatively impact customer satisfaction.(3) But managing noise effectively can raise productivity,2 improve customer experiences(5) and impact the bottom line.(1) Plantronics creates technologies that manage noise to help contact centers be more effective and businesses be more successful.

Let’s look at some common situations:

Customer Service Representative (CSR) - Needs to handle urgent requests from customers quickly and efficiently. Key challenge: Hearing and being heard by customers.

Help Desk Support - Manages intense, often lengthy, customer calls. Key challenge: Wearing headset all day (comfort, battery issues).

Supervisor - Supports CSRs with call assistance and training. Key challenge: Background noise and audio quality on escalated calls.

High-Level Support - Guides and supports CSRs on most challenging calls. Key challenge: Mobility within office to help with urgent situations.

How do you handle these challenges within your business?

New Work Styles Mean New Ways of Collaborating

Published: 18 January 2018

Johannesburg, South Africa - 18 January 2018 --Plantronics (NYSE: PLT): Thriving in today’s business environment requires collaboration. The ability for virtual, mobile, or on-premises teams to communicate across devices in real time has become a competitive advantage and a business requirement. A seamless and intuitive Unified Communications solution enables that advantage. The market bears this out. UC deployments are on the rise. According to a 2014 survey on the State of Unified Communications, 57% of respondents have deployed or plan on deploying UC in the next year compared to just 38% in the year before. Those statistics may have changed slightly in the last few years, but the message is clear. And deployment is just step one. The second step is user adoption, and adoption rates are still lagging. If your people think—regardless of the reality—that a UC solution makes it harder to connect and collaborate, they won’t use it.

The way we work is evolving.

Effective collaboration requires clear communication. Today that means allowing people to communicate when and how they choose. As a result, the challenges IT departments face are more significant than ever before. The days of just provisioning equipment are gone. Not only does IT have to accommodate an increasingly mobile and disparate workforce that brings their own technology into the enterprise, IT may be tasked with supporting multiple UC platforms. It is no longer enough to make sure everything in the office works right. IT has to make sure everything for everyone works right everywhere.

User experience matters most. In order to improve user adoption rates and maximize ROI, a collective mindset change is needed. IT can no longer view employees as an active directory listing. Successful adoption comes when IT takes a user-centric approach. IT needs to view employee satisfaction as the first and most important element to a successful UC implementation.

4 steps to improving user adoption.

  • Understand how work gets done: People need the ability to utilize the right tool at any time based on their work needs and location —IM, email, or voice; at the desk or around the office, at home or anywhere else.
  • Recommend equipment based on employee needs: What are the challenges of different work styles? Equipment should fit the way people work, people shouldn’t have to change the way they work to fit equipment. Employees shouldn’t have to change the way they work best to fit with the equipment IT recommends.
  • Offer diverse training options: Sending a PDF on how to use your new UC application isn’t enough. Just as people have different work styles, they also have different learning styles. The training IT offers should take a variety of learning styles into account.
  • Develop clear policies: Don’t just tell people what you expect from them—explain why. If people don’t understand the reasons why their ingrained ways of doing things need to change, user adoption will suffer.

Multiple devices, one voice.

Making communication seamless across devices is a significant challenge. A Unified Communications solution that can intuitively connect users regardless of their work style is paramount in today’s business environment. Successful adoption depends on IT departments providing people with options that suit them. It’s about changing perspectives. Taking a people-centric approach gives your company the best chance of meeting its UC business goals.

Unified communications enable teams to work and interact with each other from virtually anywhere. We provide organizations with technology that brings clarity and integration to your UC devices and platforms—to simplify deployment, increase adoption, and help provide real ROI on your UC investment. Our goal is to make it easier for teams to connect and collaborate. Visit us online to explore tools, tips and strategies that can help drive UC adoption rates so your people can communicate whenever and wherever they choose.
