30 Schools do CAD Training for F1 in Schools Competition

Published: 16 August 2017

Over the July holidays 170 pupils from 30 schools in the Gauteng region, including 30 teachers competed a computer Aided Design (CAD) introduction course in preparation for the 2017/18 F1 in Schools race season.

The training, provided by Sangari Education, was done at Tshwane University of Technology. The teams that attended are competing for the chance to go to the international competition in 2018.

“Students and teachers worked through tutorials, and on completion, each team designed their own F1 cars that will be competing in the racing scheduled to start in August,” said Pieter du Plessis, F1 in Schools programme manager at Sangari Education.

“Based on each team’s design, the F1 cars will be manufactured at Sangari Education’s offices overlooking the Kyalami race track. It is a great setting to prepare for the F1 in Schools competition,” he said.

The racing cars are designed using Siemens’ Solid Edge CAD software supplied locally by ESTEQ, who are also assisting Sangari with training of the teachers. This software is used for designing the shape as well as simulating the airflow allowing the design to be optimised before sending through for manufacture on a high-precision milling machine.

“The vehicles are then tested in a wind tunnel to ascertain the resistance characteristics and modifications are made if necessary.” The world record is 0.997 seconds for the F1 cars rocketing along the 20m race track.

In support of the F1 in schools Challenge the Gauteng Department of Education has deployed Technology Senior Education Specialists in every district to assist with the roll-out of the programme. The Department is excited to see the impact the experience will have on the learner’s ability to relate to the theory being taught in the technology syllabus and the overall improvement in Maths, Science and Technology results, said Mr du Plessis.

F1 in Schools is as an educational competition that promotes Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) where schools build a model F1 racing car and compete in inter-school racing competitions. The winning team will represent South Africa at the international finals later this year,” said Bez Sangari, CEO of Sangari Education.

Pule Kgasoe, teacher at Aurora Girls High School in Soweto, who competed in the 2016/17 season, said: “The competition has raised our students’ work ethic. They are now more organised and disciplined, and the programme has created new interest in maths and science.”

“The F1 programme has also enabled students to gain more confidence as well as improve their time and resource management skills,” he said. “Team work has encouraged students’ on a journey of self-discovery. New career paths are being explored based on the various roles each student plays in the development of their F1 car.”

Mr Kgasoe said there is also more interest from other students who have seen the benefits from learning science and maths.” Mr Sangari added that the programme develops entrepreneurial skills in students who are required to research, prepare a business plan and build links with industry to gain sponsorship. Students gain first-hand experience in marketing and accounting as they need to provide a complete portfolio as part of the competition.

“The F1 competition focuses on blended learning through a cross curricula approach where learners physically apply what is learnt in the classroom. The true value lies in how learners take ownership of their own learning,” he said.

“What makes the F1 in Schools Technology Challenge different is that it entails a comprehensive and inclusive learning approach. Learners engage with subjects that improve their literacy, numeracy, sport and sports science, design and technology, art and design, textiles knowledge, STEM learning, computing, and business and enterprise,” concluded Mr Sangari.

RS Components introduces easy-to-use and customisable thermal management material from Panasonic

Published: 03 August 2017

Panasonic soft-PGS series provides excellent thermal protection and supplement heatsinking in a variety of temperature-sensitive applications, especially for IGBTs and other power devices

Johannesburg, South Africa, 3 August, 2017 - RS Components (RS), the trading brand of Electrocomponents plc (LSE:ECM), the global distributor for engineers, has introduced a new range of soft-PGS (Pyrolytic Graphite Sheet) thermal interface material from Panasonic.

The material provides excellent thermal protection in an easy-to-use format that makes it ideal for delivering thermal management and heatsinking in applications where space is limited. It also provides a supplemental heatsinking ability that enhances protection offered by more conventional means.

This means the material can be used in a large variety of markets and in any temperature-sensitive application, being especially useful in enclosed or confined areas. The ultra-thin soft-PGS sheets provide an easy to handle and control thermal interface material, which is only 200µm thick, synthetically made, and offers high thermal conductivity. The sheets are manufactured from a highly oriented graphite polymer film, which creates a material that is flexible and can be easily cut into customised shapes.

The material also offers excellent heat resistance and reliability, which can help deliver a longer service life and ensure higher performance for various components such as power modules. In particular, as soft-PGS can be compressed by 40%, it is ideal for dramatically reducing the thermal resistance between a heatsink and an IGBT module.

In addition, the material’s high compressibility enables it to help reduce thermal resistance, as it provides a better fitting alternative to uneven surfaces compared to standard PGS. The soft-PGS compressible graphite range is available in a huge selection of material sizes for different manufacturer modules, and ranges from dimensions such as 24 x 37mm or 180 x 180mm and up to sizes as large as 140 x 308mm. The material is also available in small pack sizes and manufacturer pack quantities (MPQ) to meet design and pre-production requirements.

The Panasonic soft-PGS thermal protection range is now available from RS Components.

Vibescout – SA’s Largest Movie Aggregator Listing Movies on 688 Screens In 94 Cinemas

Published: 28 June 2017

28 July 2017  Vibescout – SA’s Largest Movie Aggregator Listing Movies on 688 Screens In 94 Cinemas Vibescout, an innovative start-up that provides event listings and city guides, is now listing movies showing on 690 screens in 94 cinemas across South Africa. Vibescout is now officially the largest movie aggregator in South Africa and continues to take the country’s entertainment scene to new heights.

Cape Town, South Africa, July 5, 2017 – Co-founded in 2015 by brothers’ Paul and Jonathan Myburgh, Vibescout’s vision is to provide an easy-to-use platform used to smartly curate the best things to do near you. This is done through event listings, comprehensive go-to guides and now, movie listings.

The idea behind Vibescout was first born when Paul was travelling in Saigon, Vietnam in January 2014. After visiting all the regular tourist destinations, he scoured the hostel notice boards for more unique things to do and began to wonder how he could get better insight into truly local events and activities. After realizing there was definitely a void that needed to be filled in this space, Paul brought the idea back home to South Africa later that year and soon began work on Vibescout’s first version.

Vibescout officially launched out of beta and started providing event listing in October 2016; by April 2017 they reached over 100 000 users for the month! As of 27 June 2017, Vibescout became the largest movie aggregator in South Africa, listing movies showing on 688 screens in 94 cinemas throughout the country.

“It took roughly 6 weeks to get a MVP release and from it we have had amazing user feedback. We are currently getting nearly 10 000 users weekly using our movie section to find the latest movies and locate cinemas around them. We didn't realize it at the time and such a goal wasn't even on our radar, but we are now officially the largest movie aggregator in South Africa.” - JONATHAN MYBURGH, CO-FOUNDER OF VIBESCOUT

RS Components announces availability of two series of high-performance capacitors from Panasonic

Published: 27 June 2017

New ranges include aluminium electrolytic devices offering better ripple and capacitance characteristics and EDLC wound radial-lead units delivering longer life for auxiliary power applications

Johannesburg, South Africa, 27 June, 2017 - RS Components (RS), the trading brand of Electrocomponents plc (LSE:ECM), the global distributor for engineers, has announced availability of two new series of high-performance electrolytic capacitors manufactured by Panasonic. Offering excellent characteristics for a wide variety of applications, the V-TC and V-TCU series of aluminium electrolytic capacitors are specialised miniaturised components offering ripple current and high capacitance.

The V-TC and V-TCU series are based on the proven V-TP series from Panasonic, but benefit from 1.2 to 1.5 times higher ripple current capabilities at +125°C. In addition, the V-TCU parts also offer 1.2 to 2.2 times larger capacitance values, ranging from 220 up to 680µF, while also downsizing by one aluminium-can size, for example from G to F size or from F to D8. The surface-mount capacitors feature a footprint ranging from 6.3 x 7.7mm up to 10 x 10.2mm, and typical lifetimes of 2000 hours for smaller can sizes and 3000 hours for larger devices.

The HL series electric double layer capacitors (EDLC) are radial components that come in a variety of capacitances ranging from 2.5F to 100F. The components are ideal for applications that require large discharge currents including backup power supplies for servers and storage devices, auxiliary power supplies for solar-powered products such as street lighting, and driver-assist applications for actuators in a variety of markets.

The HL series capacitors offer low resistance combined with guaranteed long life over a wide temperature range from –40°C to +65°C. They are wound radial-lead devices, which can achieve far greater capacitance compared to aluminium electrolytic capacitors – by a factor of up to 1000 times more.

They also deliver superior charge/discharge performance compared with secondary batteries, offering rapid charge and discharge over more than 500,000 cycles, as well as offering exceptional ageing characteristics leading to lifetimes of over a decade. The V-TC/U and HL series are now available from RS.
