Raspberry Pi 3 Compute Module delivering low-cost development capabilities

Published: 15 June 2017

Targeting embedded systems designers developing industrial applications, the new Raspberry Pi 3 Compute Module offers quad-core processing power

Johannesburg, South Africa, 15 June, 2017 - RS Components (RS), the trading brand of Electrocomponents plc (LSE:ECM), the global distributor for engineers, today announced the latest version of the Raspberry Pi Compute Module, based on the Raspberry Pi 3 architecture.

Designed for professional engineers to develop embedded systems, the new Raspberry Pi 3 Compute Module (CM3) fits into a standard DDR2 SODIMM socket and provides the same basic processing capabilities as the Raspberry Pi 3. In common with the Raspberry Pi 3, CM3 incorporates a 64-bit Broadcom BCM2837 application processor, built around an ARM Cortex-A53 quad-core processor running at up to 1.2GHz, and 1GB of LPDDR2 RAM.

It provides 4GB of on-board eMMC Flash storage, and retains an identical pin-out to the original Compute Module (CM1). In addition, RS are stocking the new low-cost Raspberry Pi 3 Compute Module Lite (CM3L). This includes the BCM2837 application processor and 1GB RAM, but has no on-board Flash storage.

Developers can provide an eMMC device or SD card socket on their application-specific base board. Like its predecessor, the Raspberry Pi 3 Compute Module is designed for integration into industrial-type applications. One example is the range of next-generation large-format displays from NEC.

These integrate a socket for an optional Raspberry Pi 3 Compute Module, and are designed for use in brightly lit public spaces such as schools, offices, shops and railway stations. The Raspberry Pi 3 Compute Module can also be purchased from RS as part of a development kit, bundled together with the Compute Module IO Board.

This simple, open-source, development board brings out all of the IO connectivity of CM1, CM3 or CM3L to pin headers and flexi connectors, and allows the developer to program on-board eMMC Flash over USB. It serves as a prototyping platform, and as a starting point for the development of application-specific base boards. “Our initiative to extend the deployment possibilities of the Raspberry Pi has already been a huge success, with many innovative applications being developed based on our first Compute Module,” said Eben Upton of the Raspberry Pi Foundation.

“We expect that this more powerful second-generation device, in conjunction with existing ecosystem resources including software and accompanying hardware, will enable further penetration into industrial markets.” “The introduction of this new version Compute Module shows strong commitment from the Raspberry Pi Foundation to the industrial arena, moving beyond the platform’s original mission as an educational programming tool,” said Rob Maycroft, Global Product Manager for Raspberry Pi at RS.

“Embedded system designers can draw from the resources of the extensive Raspberry Pi community and build upon the enhanced processing capabilities of the Raspberry Pi 3 to develop exciting new applications.”  The Raspberry Pi 3 Compute Module and associated development kit and companion board is now available from RS Components. For more information on Raspberry Pi products available from RS, visit: http://za.rs-online.com/web/generalDisplay.html?id=raspberrypi

3M SecureFit 600 protective eyewear range, available from RS Components, offers proper protection, comfort and style

Published: 05 June 2017

New range exploits the benefits of existing products and adds even more value

Johannesburg, South Africa, 7 June, 2017 - RS Components (RS), the trading brand of Electrocomponents plc (LSE:ECM), the global distributor for engineers, has launched a brand new SecureFit protective eyewear series from industry leader 3M. Combining the best features from the existing 200 and 400 series with additional functional and ergonomic benefits, the new SecureFit 600 series is designed for maximum comfort, fit and clarity.

The stylish new models exhibit 3M’s SecureFit Pressure Diffusion Temple (PDT) technology, so the eyewear stays on securely all day without discomfort. Designed using a cross section of facial types and structures, the PDT technology regulates the amount of force on individual head sizes to ensure the optimum pressure for a secure and comfortable fit for a very broad range of different users.

This means that the one size will comfortably fit a wider range of head sizes, giving workers better compliance. The flat and flexible design has also been designed for combining with 3M protective earmuffs (with minimal loss of attenuation) and disposable and reusable respirators.

The 11-model range includes a host of options, including: various polycarbonate lens colours (clear, grey and amber); anti-scratch coatings that are five times more scratch resistant than standard 3M hard coats, for better visibility and extended life; and 3M Scotchgard anti-fog coatings. Other options include: Welding (IR) lenses, comprising three lens types for welding, gas welding, and torch work and cutting; polarized lenses, to protect against UV (lenses absorb 99.9% of UVA and UVB rays and meet the requirements of EN 166:2001), horizontal reflective glare and sunlight; and an innovative replaceable foam gasket, to prevent the ingress of foreign objects.

Where marked, the SecureFit 600 range meets and exceeds the requirements of the K (test for abrasion by fine particles) and N (remain unfogged for eight seconds) additional tests in the EN 166:2001 standard for protective eyewear. RS will also be extending the current range of SecureFit 400 models it stocks, with reader safety glasses. Eyesight is one of the most important faculties of any person, which is why it rates so highly on insurance scales for personal injury.

For the same reason, leading developers like 3M undertake constant research and development to deliver the best possible protection coupled to comfort and style. This eyewear and many other safety products can be found in the RS Personal Protective Equipment portal (http://za.rs-online.com/web/generalDisplay.html?id=i/personal-protective-equipment)

Annual Robot Race

Published: 29 May 2017

Robots Race it out in Tshwane

Pretoria, South Africa, 29 May, 2017 - Global industrial and electronics distributor RS Components, are one of the sponsors for the fifth EECE Race Day at the University of Pretoria this year. The Race Day offers third year microcontroller students at the department of electrical, electronic and computer engineering the opportunity to showcase their practical skills and to put theory into practise.

The event, now in its fifth year, originated at the end of 2012 as the brainchild of Professor Tania Hanekom, who at that stage had already been the lecturer for the third-year Microcontrollers module EMK310 for eight years. The idea was to create a learning environment that would foster an appreciation for the complexities of the design and implementation of a microcontroller-based engineering system.

Engineering students are competitive by nature and the notion of a competition was an appealing approach to capitalise on this characteristic while having fun.  In essence, students design, construct and test an autonomous, line-following robot vehicle, but the snag is that the track consists of a criss-cross pattern of coloured lines. Line-follower robots as presented on the internet invariably follow black on white or white on black lines; therefore, the implication is that students need to develop the system from first principles.

By levelling the playing field through a number of standardised components (for example, the motors), excellence is encouraged, since students have to use their ingenuity to devise strategies that will give their car an edge over those of their competitors.

RS Components sponsored Raspberry Pi CanaKits for one of the winning teams at the event as well as various components to upgrade the gantry. Raspberry Pi is a credit-card size computer board that is used to teach computer coding and can be used in robotics and various PC type functions like running a media centre. Mellisa Naidoo, Head of Marketing at RS Components SA, explained that the company has taken a long term view on education and supporting future engineers, hence our support for the TUKS Race Day for the third year running.

“Our aim is to remove the barriers of learning and innovation by providing access to products, tools and resources for engineers and students so that they can experiment, design and create solutions to solve real world challenges.”

One of the latest solutions from RS is the free-of-charge ‘ToolBox App’ available for use on iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad, as well as for Windows-based PCs. The Toolbox App provides an easy access point to an extensive range of functions including popular electronic reference materials and a multitude of calculation and conversion tools in an easy-to-use format for electronics design engineers, hobbyists and students. In addition to the reference tools and calculators, Toolbox offers the latest news on technology from the DesignSpark community, including 3D models of thousands of products. For more information on the Toolbox App and free software downloads go to www.designspark.com

Johannesburg, South Africa, 25 May, 2017 - RS Components (RS), the trading brand of Electrocomponents plc (LSE:ECM), the global distributor for engineers, has announced availability of the latest connectivity device based on the innovative SKEDD plug-in technology. Delivering a reduction in purchase and installation cost, the new series of 3.5mm-pitch SDDC PCB terminal blocks from Phoenix Contact is ideal for designing in wire-to-board connectivity for a wide range of general electronics design applications including automotive, industrial and consumer electronics, large electrical goods, control cabinets, power tools and medical equipment.

PCB terminal blocks enable the easy and secure transmission of signals, data, and power directly to a board. Meeting the need for smaller and simpler devices with ever-increasing functionality, Phoenix Contact’s direct-plug-in SKEDD technology enables direct contact between connector and PCB without the need for a plug and header combination, thereby saving cost. No soldering is required, as the terminal block features latches positioned on each side of the device, which operate locking pins to ensure secure and vibration resistant connection to the PCB.

The SKEDD design also enables the contacts to have sufficient force to create a gas-tight connection on the PCB. Saving time and avoiding the need for extra tooling, the series offers screwless push-in spring terminations for wire connections. In addition, the series is environmentally friendly as the devices can be easily removed from PCBs and recycled. Designed to save space, with availability in a range of models from 2-16 positions offering 4-32 poles, the devices have a double-row configuration that makes them ideal for high-density PCB applications.

The SDDC 3.5 series is suitable for conductor cross-sections from 0.2 to 1.5mm2, and is designed to handle currents up to 8A and voltages up to 160V.  The SDDC 3.5mm SKEDD terminal blocks from Phoenix Contact are now available from RS.

Available from RS Components, new Barth mini-PLCs provide powerful capabilities in a best-fit package

Published: 24 May 2017

New PLCs, programmer and display add to impressive Barth product portfolio

Johannesburg, South Africa, 24 May, 2017 - RS Components (RS), the trading brand of Electrocomponents plc (LSE:ECM), the global distributor for engineers, has just updated its mini-PLC range from highly innovative controller manufacturer Barth Elektronik. The new product introductions, for which RS is the exclusive global distributor, include three new mini-PLCs, a new parameter programmer and a touchscreen display.

The three new mini-PLCs are based on a 32-bit ARM® Cortex® processor, which offers a significant step change in performance. Programming is via the established miCon-L software, as well as allowing open source C-programming with the KEIL® µVision software suite. All PLCs exhibit 10 I/O and a CAN interface that allows communication with external devices. The STG-800 offers three 0 to 30 VDC analogue inputs with a 12-bit ADC, a 25 KHz-input event counter, a 40 µs-input pulse and frequency counter, four solid-state power outputs (up to 1.5 A) and a 16-bit 1 Hz to 25 kHz power PWM output.

The STG-810 model adds an IrDA (Infrared) comms port, for communication with the new PG-65 parameter programmer. Finally, the STG-820 offers the same as the STG-810, but offers analogue output instead of PWM. The mini-PLCs provide hardware-oriented microcontroller programming at the lowest current consumption in a small form factor and are ideal for a range of applications including: industrial and building automation, automotive and maritime technology, technical education/university, and large electrical goods.

All three PLCs come with connectors and are complemented by open source templates, the miCon-L software suite and manuals and sample programs, which can all be downloaded. The new PG-65 parameter programmer can be connected via CANbus or IrDA to the PLCs and can be used to activate or deactivate programs or upload new parameters to easily adjust I/O settings without the need for a computer. Its 2.4 inch 240 x 320 colour touchscreen display, rugged design, aluminium die-cast housing and intuitive graphical menu makes it ideal for field service use.

The DMA-20 offers the same functionality as the PG-65 parameter programmer, but with an IP65 (splash proof) touchscreen display. Many industrial controllers are often over specified, which results in additional expenditure, steeper learning curves and over complication. The mini-PLC range from Barth on the other hand delivers a best-fit solution for a whole range of smaller applications that simply do not require overly powerful PLCs. These new products and others from the Barth range can be found exclusively on the RS website [http://za.rs-online.com/web/b/barth/].

A Heroic day for the Sandton SPCA

Published: 19 May 2017

6 May 2017 was international Free Comic Book Day where, all over the world comic books are handed out to visitors of local events. Sandton comic book store, Central City Comics decided to use this day to help visitors embrace their inner superheroes and raise funds for the Sandton SPCA.

Global Access heard the call and joined in to help spread information and knowledge around the SPCA on the day using their interactive technology, Sensanetik. Global Access helped set up the stand for the Sandton SPCA with grass, bowls for the pets on the day to have access to water, tables and chairs as well as a custom SPCA Sensanetik display. This experiential digital signage solution allowed people the chance to pick up and hold a toy version of the animals the SPCA helps. With the content on the screen changing every time the cat or dog was lifted, visitors throughout the day learned more about how they could help the SPCA.

“Technology can connect us if used correctly. It was a privilege to use our experience, skills and solutions to create a digital display solution for the SPCA that was memorable, interactive and above all built a connection between visitors and the SPCA.“ Says Ivano Stipcevich, Head of Digital Signage Networks at Global Access.

The SPCA is run purely off donations and receives no money from the Government and it is days’ like this and companies like those involved at the CC Heroes day that make all the difference. The Sandton SPCA from the combined efforts of the comic book store, Global Access and all the visitors and exhibitors on the day managed to gather donations of food, money and blankets to the value of R 10 000.“There is a superhero in all of us, we just need the courage to put on the cape.” – SupermanGlobal Access is an innovative digital media and content solutions provider.
