Maritza Mostert on leadership resilience and opportunity in a traditionally male space
Following just over two years in an acting capacity, during which she gained extensive hands-on leadership experience, Maritza Mostert has been officially appointed as Surveillance & Security Manager of Flamingo Casino in Kimberley, the first woman to be appointed to the role at the property.
Mostert’s career at Flamingo began in December 2003. “What a journey it has been—and continues to be,” she says. “I have a deep love for the gaming industry, the people within it, and the ever-evolving challenges that come with it.”
The Surveillance & Security Manager position is traditionally male-dominated, says Mostert. “However, I firmly believe that modern women are fully independent, capable, and well-equipped to meet these challenges head-on. Coming from a background as an Investigations Manager, I have gained valuable knowledge, skills, and experience that enable me to add meaningful value to my current role, the department, and the business unit as a whole.”
In addition, shortly before her appointment, Mostert successfully completed her training in:
Knowledge of the Firearms Control ActHandling and use of a handgunHandling and use of a self-loading rifle or carbineHandling and use of a manually operated rifle or carbineHandling and use of a shotgun
Mostert leads a team of 29 employees, consisting of 11 surveillance team members and 18 security team members. Day-to-day she is fully responsible and accountable for leading and managing surveillance, compliance, and security operations, including oversight of the in-house security company. This is done in strict alignment with gaming regulations, legislative requirements, and company standards. It is a role that carries significant responsibility, and when not managed correctly, can lead to serious repercussions.
“Surveillance and security play critical roles in mitigating risk exposure and in protecting guests, staff, and the property from both internal and external threats. As the corporate world continues to evolve, women are increasingly stepping into leadership roles, and in many households, women are now the primary breadwinners,” says Mostert, who has some solid advice for women.
“Do not let anyone—men, people, opinions, or history—dictate your future. You are in control. Set your goals, achieve your objectives, and remember that even the sky is not the limit. I am a strong believer in women empowerment and in developing the next generation of female leaders. Women bring a unique energy to the workplace, and staying connected to your team adds immense value to performance and morale.”
When asked if she has any self-defence advice to share from one woman to another, Mostert says safety begins with awareness and self-confidence. She encourages women to be mindful of their surroundings, understand their environment, and set clear personal boundaries.
“It is important to stay alert and trust your instincts. The mindset of ‘it could never happen to me’ is not one that serves us,” she says. “Empower yourself, know your worth, and take ownership of your personal safety.”
She has been happily married for 12 years, although she and her husband have known each other since October 2005. “He is my greatest supporter, and I truly consider myself blessed by God and spoiled by my husband, Johannes or ‘Mossie’ as one of the nicknames I give him.”
In their spare time, they enjoy riding super bikes, and as a personal lifestyle choice, they decided not to have children. “Instead, we are proud paw parents to our bull terrier, Lilo, who is our world. When I’m not riding, I enjoy curling up with a Stephen King novel. Music is my daily medication, and those who know me often say, ‘what you see is what you get’.”
