Litter collection drives awareness of pollution for the benefit of marine life
Recently, 20 volunteers from various departments of Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom headed to the nearby Umdloti beach, armed with trash bags and walked along the coastline collecting litter, from packets and cold drink cans to discarded fishing hooks and tackle.
The initiative was aimed at collecting plastic, waste and debris from the beach, with additional activities like awareness talks and recycling drives taking place.
The intent is also to raise awareness about pollution and encourage eco-friendly habits, as well as the long term goal of protecting marine life and preserving natural beauty.
“A single beach clean-up can collect hundreds of kilograms of waste in just a few hours,” said Solomon Khumalo, Safety, Health and Environment Manager at Sibaya.
“Beyond cleaning, these events raised awareness and inspired people to reduce single-use plastic in daily life.”
Marine and river pollution is a worrying scourge that is threatening the health and sustainability of our environment, he continues. “It has a direct impact on indigenous plants, wildlife, birds and marine life. With this annual effort, we take an active role in removing litter and pollutants from this beautiful beach area and hopefully inspire people in the community to be more conscious about cleaning up and conserving the environment as well.”
