A FUSION OF BLUES, JAZZ AND AFRO MUSIC INGITES THE VIBE AT BAY HARBOUR MARKET
HOUT BAY, WESTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA: 25 JUNE 2013: On June 28th, The Buchanan Brothers Blues Band takes to the sound stage at Bay Harbour Market, Hout Bay for Friday Night LIVE! Laying their mix of blues and rock on Saturday, June 29th is The Bootleggers Blues and playing on Sunday, June 30th is Afro-Fusion contemporary band Khala.
Friday Night LIVE! 28 June – The Buchanan Brothers Blues Band
Friday Night LIVE! on 28 June on Bay Harbour Sound Stage sees Brothers Mark and Ian Buchanan’s brand, The Buchanan Brothers Blues Band. Their love for the blues started at an early age. Mark’s passion for music led him to Johannesburg to play music professionally for 8 years.
Mark has performed with the likes of Just Jinger, Max Normal and The Original Evergreens. Currently playing in Closet Snare, an electronic jazz outfit in Cape Town, his love of the Fender Stratocaster and the blues has seen him collaborate with his brother to form The Buchanan Brothers Blues Band. Backed by the steady rhythms of Mark Macdonald on drums, their motto is, "Without the blues there would be nothing."
Saturday 29 June – The Bootlegger’s Blues
On Saturday 29 June, laying their mix of blues and rock on the Bay Harbour Sound Stage is The Bootleggers Blues Band. Covering artists such as Son House, Jimmy Reed, Willie Dixon alongside the more well-known Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry and Stevie Ray Vaughan, the band are sure to entertain Cape Town audiences with their brand of rocking blues.
The band currently features original members, vocalist and harp player Terry Porter and lead guitarist Ralph Buddle. The Bootlegger’s stellar line up also includes guitarist/vocalist Hallam Lewis, Dieter Stutz on bass, drummer Brian Mansell and keyboard player Trevor Perrins.
Sunday 30 June - Khala
On Sunday 30 June, Khala take to the Bay Harbour Sound Stage with an Afro-Fusion blend of contemporary music and traditional African rhythms to create hybrid music and dance style. 'Khala' by definition is an intense expression of emotional outcry. A perfect harmony of creativity; a surprising burst of emotional colour where everything just works exactly as intended or better. These are the moments improvisational musicians live for, and something Khala works to create space for in their music.
The band is made up of a diverse group of accomplished musicians from different countries with interesting cultural and musical backgrounds, which lends itself to their unique Neo-Afro-Soul sound. Vocalist Nosipho Dikilili is accompanied by virtuoso soloists Peter Ndlala (Saxophones) and Thabiso (Keyboards), and the powerful rhythm section of Thuli (Drums) and Sean Strydom (bass). Afro fusion is becoming more popular as it blends with mainstream dance, so expect to be inspired!
The market is open from 5pm to 9pm on Friday and from 9.30am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday. Entrance is free.
