Hytec South Africa Donates Safe Sanitation Facilities to ECD Centre in Pietermaritzburg

To address the unsafe reliance on pit latrines at Masihambisane Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre, Hytec South Africa, in partnership with Envirosan, has provided much-needed hygienic and sustainable sanitation facilities.
The new structures ensure that the centre’s 67 young children (aged one to six years) and three staff members now have access to safe and hygienic sanitation facilities, transforming their learning environment and addressing a critical safety concern.
A Commitment to Education and Development
“There was a dire need for a dignified and sustainable sanitation solution for the children and staff,” says Freddie Kühn, General Manager of Hytec South Africa.
Education is a key focus for Hytec South Africa's socio-economic development initiatives, with the company committed to actively monitoring the facilities at schools and projects it supports.
Key Features of the Sanitation Upgrade
The project includes:
- Four precast concrete toilet structures fitted with child-friendly EaziFlush™ low-flush systems.
- A 2 500-litre septic tank with a modular soak-away system.
- A 2 700-litre handwash station equipped with self-cleaning taps.
- A rainwater harvesting system to promote sustainability.
Hytec South Africa financed the majority of the project, while Envirosan covered additional costs that arose during construction.
Addressing Safety Hazards
Before this intervention, children used makeshift facilities, including two potties on a cement slab and precarious pit latrines. The pit latrines posed significant safety hazards, particularly for young children.
The old latrines will now be responsibly decommissioned, with the pits sealed using concrete slabs and all materials safely removed to ensure cleanliness and environmental compliance.
Driving Change for a Better Future
“Access to safe and hygienic sanitation facilities is a basic human right. The numerous distressing stories about children and pit latrines have led to an urgent call for change. We need to create significant improvements in the lives of these children and enhance their school experiences,” says Kühn.
Hytec South Africa, in collaboration with Envirosan, aims to replicate this project in other rural schools and ECD centres that still rely on unsafe sanitation facilities.
This initiative is part of Hytec’s broader commitment to fostering sustainable and dignified solutions that support education and socio-economic development in South Africa.
