The Hidden Cost of AI - What Microsoft, Uber and Other Businesses Are Discovering

For the past two years, artificial intelligence has been promoted as a technology that could automate work, improve efficiency, and reduce staffing requirements.
Yet a growing number of businesses are discovering a different reality. The biggest benefit of AI may not be replacing employees. It may be helping employees spend less time on repetitive work and more time on activities that create real business value.
Recent reports involving organisations such as Microsoft, Uber, Klarna, and others suggest that many businesses are moving beyond AI hype and focusing on a more practical question: Is AI actually improving productivity?
Artificial intelligence is proving highly effective at creating first drafts, summarising lengthy documents, assisting with research, generating reports, organising information, and helping employees process large volumes of data.
These capabilities can save significant amounts of time.
However, businesses are also discovering that AI-generated outputs still require human judgement, validation, experience, and accountability.
Moving Beyond AI Hype
Recent reports have highlighted some of the challenges organisations are encountering as AI adoption accelerates.
Uber reportedly exhausted its annual budget for certain AI coding tools within the first few months of the year, prompting discussions around whether high levels of AI usage were translating into measurable business outcomes.
Klarna, which previously promoted the use of AI to reduce customer service workloads, has since acknowledged the ongoing importance of human support and customer interaction.
These examples do not suggest that AI is failing. Rather, they highlight an important lesson: AI usage and business value are not always the same thing.
Businesses are increasingly asking a more practical question: How much time are employees saving, and is the quality of work improving as a result?
The Real Value Of AI
According to Arnold Muscat, Director of College Africa Group (CAG), this is one of the most important lessons emerging from real-world AI adoption.
"Many organisations initially viewed AI as a potential staff-reduction tool," says Muscat. "In practice, we are increasingly seeing AI used to remove administrative heavy lifting, accelerate research, create summaries, and generate first drafts. The real value comes when skilled employees use that time saving to focus on higher-value work."
The Growing Importance Of Human Skills
This shift is creating renewed appreciation for core workplace skills.
Critical thinking.
Communication.
Data analysis.
Problem solving.
Business judgement.
These are the skills that allow employees to determine whether AI-generated outputs are accurate, useful, and appropriate for the business.
In areas such as finance, administration, project management, reporting, and Microsoft Excel, the ability to validate information may be becoming more important rather than less important.
Measuring Productivity, Not Activity
Businesses are also beginning to recognise that AI usage does not automatically equal productivity.
More licences.
More prompts.
More tokens.
More AI activity.
None of these guarantees better business outcomes.
What matters is whether employees are saving time, reducing errors, improving service levels, producing higher-quality work, and making better decisions.
Focusing On Return On Investment
As organisations continue investing in AI technologies, many are shifting their focus from AI adoption to AI return on investment.
The companies that achieve the greatest success may not be those that use the most AI.
They may be the organisations that combine AI productivity with human expertise, accountability, and professional judgement.
AI can create content.
Humans create value.
