Outcome of SAPPMA Special Meeting: Renewed Focus on Quality

On 2 October 2024, SAPPMA held a pivotal special quality meeting via Zoom, gathering members to address pressing concerns within the industry. Led by Chairman Jan Venter, the meeting reaffirmed the critical need for collective action to maintain the integrity of the SAPPMA brand.

Key Discussions

The agenda centred on ongoing challenges in quality assurance, particularly regarding PVC and HDPE materials. SAPPMA CEO Jan Venter emphasised that the differentiation of the SAPPMA brand is at risk if quality is not rigorously upheld. He highlighted concerns about the use of inferior recycled materials, warning that it could compromise the overall quality of branded products.

Resolution and Consensus

Several key resolutions were agreed upon to strengthen quality control:

1. Commitment to Brand Protection
Members recognised the need to safeguard the SAPPMA brand by adhering strictly to the Code of Conduct, which mandates product quality and ethical business practices.

2. Random Sampling and Testing
Members supported the introduction of random sampling and the publication of test results. This process includes unannounced factory audits and compliance checks to ensure all products meet required specifications.

3. Accountability Measures
It was agreed that any refusal to sign the updated Code of Conduct would lead to membership termination, underscoring the importance of accountability.

4. Project Superior Quality 2024
The ongoing Project Superior Quality 2024 initiative was discussed, with stricter requirements for materials and increased media outreach to raise market awareness.

Concerns and Clarifications

Members raised concerns about testing procedures and the handling of repeat testing offences, advocating for clearer sanctions on recurring non-compliance. There were also queries regarding the logistics and costs of product testing.

The Chairman reassured members that SAPPMA would cover the costs of testing and maintain transparency by notifying manufacturers of their results. The need for stringent checks on new products and the role of raw material quality were also highlighted.

Moving Forward

Following the discussions, it was resolved that:

  1. The quality standards guidance document will be revised based on member feedback.
  2. Ongoing communication and education on compliance with industry standards will be prioritised to ensure alignment with the goal of enhanced product quality.

The meeting concluded with a commitment from SAPPMA members to uphold the highest standards of quality, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the industry. The shared vision for a robust and reputable plastic pipe manufacturing sector was reaffirmed, with members departing the meeting motivated to tackle quality issues collaboratively.

SAPPMA will continue to monitor progress and engage members in further discussions as they work towards maintaining their brand's integrity in a competitive market.
