Durban Central Teams Set For Sixth Leg Of SPAR KZN Schoolgirls Hockey Challenge
Just past the halfway mark of the 2026 SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge, attention turns to the Durban Central Regional, taking place at 3 Schools Trust on Sunday, 22 March, hosted by St Henry’s Marist College.
Six competitive teams will take to the turf, including St Henry’s Marist College, Durban Girls’ College, Durban Girls’ High School, Inanda Seminary Secondary School, a combined Inanda, Ntuzuma and KwaMashu side, and defending champions Maris Stella School.
The action begins at 8am, with hosts St Henry’s opening the tournament against Durban Girls’ College. A total of 15 round robin matches will be played, each lasting 25 minutes. While all round robin fixtures will run on allocated time, the final will allow for a penalty shootout should teams finish level.
Format And Path To The Final
Teams will compete for points throughout the round robin stage, with a win earning four points. In the case of a draw, both teams will receive points — one point each for a goalless draw and two points each if goals are scored. A loss yields no points.
At the conclusion of the round robin, the top two teams on the log will progress to the regional final to compete for top honours.
Grand Finals Spots Up For Grabs
Four teams have already secured their places at the Grand Finals, set to take place at St Mary’s D.S.G. in July. These include Our Lady of Fatima, Amanzimtoti High School, St John’s D.S.G., and St Anne’s Diocesan College.
The remaining qualifying spots will be decided as the tournament continues across KwaZulu-Natal, with the Highway Regional taking place a day earlier at Westville Girls’ High School and further regionals scheduled for May.
Strong Track Record Among Competing Schools
Several teams in the Durban Central Regional bring impressive histories to the competition. Durban Girls’ College has been a dominant force, claiming 14 wins since the tournament began in 2011. Maris Stella secured their first Grand Finals appearance last year, while Durban Girls’ High School has previously qualified three times during the tournament’s early years.
Opportunities Beyond The Tournament
In addition to on-field success, matric players competing in the challenge stand a chance to win a bursary for a year of study at eta College, a leading sports science, coaching, and management institution in Durban. The bursary winner will be announced at the Grand Finals.
All matches will be livestreamed on the SuperSport Schools app, allowing supporters to follow the action remotely.
