Superb golfing for a tense and exciting finish
Louis Albertse claimed his third Sunshine Tour victory in dramatic fashion when he beat Pieter Moolman in a playoff to win the Sunbet Challenge hosted by Sibaya Casino at Umhlali Country Club on Friday, 19 September 2025.
It was a predictably tight finish to a tournament that remained wide open going into the final round, with five players tied for the lead. Albertse and Moolman were part of that group, writes Michael Vlismas for SuperSport.
“It was Moolman who took the early advantage and went into the back nine with a two-stroke lead over Albertse.
“But it was Albertse’s flawless back nine that forced the playoff as he made four birdies. Moolman birdied the last to set the target at 11 under par before being joined there by Albertse. Both players closed with rounds of 66.
“Albertse then birdied the second playoff hole to take the title."
The Sunbet Challenge Series consists of four golf tournaments at Sun City, Wild Coast Sun, Time Square and Sibaya. The series forms part of the Sunshine Tour, in partnership with Sunbet, Sun International’s online betting site.
A true gem of the Dolphin Coast, Umhlali Country Club is a tropical oasis with magnificent palm lined fairways, seven feature water holes and the greenest of grass coating it all year round.
The 18-hole course was designed by Peter Matkovich and is characteristically varied, providing a fantastic golfing test over the relatively short distance. Indigenous flora and fauna are abundant here too and the course has simply been sculpted around the inherent beauty of the land. To the east lies the Indian Ocean and to the West, the rolling hills.
“We are immensely proud to have hosted such an exciting and tightly fought event,” says Virath Gobrie, General Manager, Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom. “Louis Albertse’s performance exemplifies the very best of professional golf – resilience, precision and nerves of steel. To see competitors bring their A-game to Umhlali Country Club reminds us why Sibaya is committed to partnering with a premier venue for high-calibre sport. Congratulations to Albertse and all who played.”
