FOUR PAWS Marks Two Years of Lion Nikola at LIONSROCK Sanctuary
FOUR PAWS is proud to mark two years since the arrival of lion Nikola at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary, near Bethlehem in South Africa’s Free State province. His journey, from a life of illegal private keeping in Montenegro to specialised rehabilitation in Europe and finally to the natural expanses of LIONSROCK, stands as a powerful testament to the impact of global rescue collaboration and long-term sanctuary care.
Nikola’s story began in Montenegro, where he was kept illegally in a private household before escaping, being captured by firefighters and ultimately confiscated by authorities in collaboration with local NGO partners and FOUR PAWS. Following his confiscation, Nikola was transferred to FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary in the Netherlands in June 2022, where he spent his early rehabilitation months receiving expert care tailored to recovering big cats.
In April 2024, Nikola was transferred to his forever home at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary, where he continues to grow in confidence and heal from his traumatic past.
A Life Reclaimed Under Free State Skies
Today, Nikola roams in a spacious, species-appropriate environment surrounded by natural vegetation, open views and a climate well-suited to lions. His care team notes his natural curiosity and preference for observing visitors from a comfortable distance, a behaviour that reflects both his sensitivity and his growing sense of safety.
“Nikola’s transformation over these past two years has been remarkable,” says Hildegard Pirker, Sanctuary Manager at LIONSROCK. “When he first arrived, he was still cautious and carried the imprint of his difficult early life. Today, he moves with ease throughout his enclosure, explores his surroundings confidently and responds positively to the enrichment our team provides. It’s an honour to witness his recovery.”
LIONSROCK, located just outside Bethlehem, is home to around 100 rescued big cats from across the world, many of whom endured inadequate conditions before rescue. The sanctuary provides lifetime care in large, natural enclosures specially designed to meet the physical and emotional needs of rescued lions, tigers, leopards and other big cats.
“Nikola reminds us why FOUR PAWS does this work,” Pirker adds. “Big cats do not belong in private hands. His journey, from confiscation to rehabilitation to a real forever home, shows what can be achieved when governments, NGOs and sanctuaries work together for the welfare of a single animal. Multiply that impact across all the animals under our care and the importance of sanctuaries like LIONSROCK becomes undeniable.”
A Symbol of Global Animal Welfare Collaboration
Nikola’s rescue also highlights the international network that makes such interventions possible. FOUR PAWS operates multiple sanctuaries worldwide, including FELIDA in the Netherlands and LIONSROCK in South Africa, ensuring that animals rescued from poor captivity, conflict zones or exploitation receive long-term, compassionate care.
From the moment of his confiscation to his journey through Europe and ultimately to the Free State, Nikola’s story reflects the challenges big cats face under private ownership, and the efforts needed to protect them from exploitation.
“Every big cat deserves safety, dignity and the chance to live naturally, not as a pet or entertainment object,” says Pirker. “Nikola’s continued healing reinforces that message, and we are committed to ensuring his days remain peaceful and fulfilling.”
Remembering Vasylyna
Alongside celebrating two years of lion Nikola’s life at LIONSROCK, FOUR PAWS also remembers the sudden passing of lioness Vasylyna, his beloved companion.
Rescued as a cub from the war-torn streets of Ukraine, Vasylyna found refuge at FELIDA in the Netherlands, where she formed a deep bond with Nikola in what became affectionately known as the love story of “Nikolyna.” Together, they were transferred to LIONSROCK in April 2024, where they thrived as one of the sanctuary’s loving and inseparable pairs.
Tragically, in late 2025, Vasylyna passed away unexpectedly, leaving Nikola without his closest companion. Since then, the LIONSROCK caretaker team has focused closely on supporting Nikola through daily routines, behavioural monitoring, tailored enrichment activities and consistent emotional support to ensure his wellbeing during this difficult period.
“The loss of Vasylyna was heartbreaking for our team and deeply felt by Nikola,” says Hildegard Pirker. “But he has shown extraordinary resilience. Every day, we walk this journey with him gently, patiently and with immense care. His strength and adaptability continue to inspire us.”
Despite his loss, Nikola’s story continues as a powerful testament to the resilience of rescued animals and the dedication of those who protect them.
