Jacaranda FM Launches #SafeSpace Campaign for the Third Year - Local Male Celebrities Share Their Mental Health Journeys
Submitted by: El BroideJacaranda FM, in partnership with October Health, has kicked off the #SafeSpace campaign for the third consecutive year. Announced on Breakfast with Martin Bester, the initiative focuses on men’s wellness, offering free mental health support via the October Health app. Throughout November, the campaign will address four key wellness areas—Emotional, Social, Financial, and Physical health—through expert-led discussions and insights.
As part of the campaign, South African male celebrities are opening up about their mental health struggles, encouraging men to access support and share their experiences.
Craig Lucas: Tackling Loss, Addiction, and Mental Health
Craig Lucas, raised in Bonteheuwel, shared how his upbringing shaped his aspirations and challenges. Following the tragic loss of his brother and sister-in-law, Craig faced a pivotal choice:
“I had to decide if I was going to numb myself with substances or start trying to be better.”
Diagnosed with bipolar II disorder and later exploring a potential borderline personality disorder diagnosis, Craig emphasises the importance of professional help:
“There are people educated to treat these things better.”
Celebrating three years of sobriety, Craig hopes his journey inspires others to confront mental health challenges head-on.
Loufi: Overcoming Addiction and Finding Purpose
Afrikaans pop sensation Loufi revealed his struggles with Tik and Mandrax, which began during his youth in Gqeberha. A turning point came when he realised the toll drugs had taken on his life:
“I realised I was losing who I was.”
Finding strength in faith, Loufi began his recovery journey and has maintained 12 years of sobriety. His story underscores the importance of a supportive circle and prioritising mental well-being.
Rob Forbes: Healing Through Therapy
Rob Forbes, Jacaranda FM’s drive-time host, candidly discussed the challenges of divorce and the loss of his brother during lockdown. Therapy played a crucial role in his healing process:
“Feelings aren’t things you need to fight or defeat—they’re just there. Accepting them can make a huge difference.”
Rob’s perspective on loss offers solace:
“Life will never be the same, and that’s okay. There’s peace in embracing a new reality while keeping their memory close.”
