Everything You Need To Know About SQD-Mini LED TV Technology

TCL has introduced SQD-Mini LED (Super Quantum Dot Mini LED) to the South African market, marking the latest advancement in premium large-screen display technology and setting a new benchmark for brightness, colour precision, and contrast performance.
Backed by its position as the Global No.1 Mini LED and Ultra Large Screen TV brand (75”+) according to OMDIA 2025, TCL continues to push the boundaries of display innovation with the introduction of SQD-Mini LED in South Africa.
But what exactly is SQD-Mini LED, and why is it being positioned as the next pinnacle of display technology?
A Next-Generation Evolution Of Mini LED
SQD-Mini LED represents a significant evolution of QD-Mini LED technology.
Through systematic improvements to the Mini LED backlight, Quantum Dot layer, and the colour filter within the LCD panel, it delivers leading performance in brightness, colour accuracy, and contrast.
Unlike RGB Mini LED, which attempts to change the light source itself, SQD-Mini LED uses a highly refined blue LED backlight paired with newly formulated quantum dots and TCL’s proprietary Ultra Colour Filter.
This eliminates colour crosstalk and achieves up to a 33% boost in colour gamut and a 69% improvement in quantum dot accuracy compared to previous generations.
How SQD-Mini LED Compares To Other Technologies
VS RGB Mini LED:
SQD-Mini LED offers three times more precise dimming zones, higher brightness, a more stable wide colour gamut, and is completely free from colour crosstalk (where colours bleed into each other).
VS OLED:
SQD-Mini LED delivers substantially higher peak brightness, reaching up to 10,000 nits in flagship models, along with greater long-term durability and stronger performance in ultra large screen formats, all while eliminating the risk of permanent burn-in.
Ultimate Colour
Through TCL’s Super QLED technology and advanced Ultra Colour Filter, SQD-Mini LED achieves full coverage of the BT.2020 colour space, the widest standard for HDR content and the highest standard for colour accuracy used in Hollywood mastering.
This results in richer, purer, and more lifelike colours that stay true to the creator’s intent.
Ultimate Brightness
Flagship SQD-Mini LED models can reach peak brightness of 10,000 nits, revealing incredible detail in both bright and dark scenes while maintaining accurate colours, perfect for bright South African living rooms and high-dynamic-range content.
Ultimate Contrast
With up to 20,736 local dimming zones (on the largest models), combined with TCL’s All-Domain Halo Control Technology, SQD-Mini LED delivers deeper blacks, reduced haloing, and exceptional shadow detail for a more cinematic experience.
Superior Panel Technology
TCL’s specially engineered glass and anti-reflection coating produce noticeably crisper, clearer images with reduced glare and enhanced native contrast, even in bright daylight.
Built For Big-Screen Viewing
As larger TVs become the norm, SQD-Mini LED is specifically designed to perform at scale.
Compared to technologies like OLED, it offers higher brightness on bigger screens, a longer lifespan and more stable colour performance over time.
Immersive Audio By Bang & Olufsen
Higher-end models feature professionally tuned Bang & Olufsen audio systems, delivering powerful, spatial sound that perfectly complements the stunning visuals.
Making Premium Accessible
By bringing flagship-level display performance, Bang & Olufsen tuned audio, and ultra-large screen options into more attainable premium segments, TCL is expanding access to next-generation home cinema experiences for South African consumers.
“South African consumers should never have to compromise on picture quality when investing in a premium home entertainment experience. As the Global No.1 Mini LED and Ultra Large Screen TV brand, TCL is proud to bring SQD-Mini LED to the local market, delivering breakthrough brightness, cinema-grade colour precision, advanced light control, and immersive Bang & Olufsen audio in a way that makes true flagship performance more accessible than ever,” said Mr. Mike Chen, General Manager at TCL South Africa.
With SQD-Mini LED, TCL is setting a new benchmark for premium home entertainment in South Africa, combining breakthrough display innovation, immersive Bang & Olufsen audio, and large-screen leadership into a more accessible premium proposition.
The technology will debut across TCL’s 2026 flagship television lineup, alongside selected Audio by Bang & Olufsen models and connected Google smart home appliances, with retail availability details to be announced soon.
