Today, there are four established walking groups, alongside numerous independent walkers, with close to 50 residents taking to the trails in any given week.
According to resident Les Barker, the variety of walking options ensures there is something for everyone:
Road Walkers meet twice weekly for brisk, fitness-focused walks along tarred roads.Trail Walkers explore the estate three times a week, navigating farm roads, sugarcane contours, and forest MTB trails.Wednesday and Saturday Strollers enjoy shorter, more relaxed walks, often followed by coffee at the community centre or local cafés.
“Walking along these routes is both invigorating and calming,” says Barker. “You’re surrounded by nature, whether it’s the sound of birds like kingfishers and green wood-hoopoes, or spotting a baby Crowned Eagle in its nest. The sunrise over the ocean, the fresh air, and the ever-changing scenery make every walk unique.”
Renishaw Hills offers an extensive network of walking routes that blend inland beauty with coastal access. Barker says that some of the popular trails include:
The River Trail: Winding alongside the Mpambanyoni River with scenic crossings and lush vegetation.Mamba Alley: A favourite forest route that leads all the way to Scottburgh Main Beach.The Zig-Zag Trail: Near a waterfall, offering shaded pathways through indigenous coastal forest.Mineshaft Viewpoint: Rewarding walkers with panoramic views over rivers, wetlands, and the Indian Ocean.
Many of these walks naturally extend to the coastline, with residents often heading to the beach for a sunrise break or a takeaway coffee before returning home. Regular social stops - whether at local cafés or impromptu gatherings - add to the sense of community, with walkers celebrating birthdays, seasonal events, and even decorating a roadside Christmas tree together.
The walking community also extends beyond the estate, with Renishaw Hills residents occasionally joining groups like the Widdies Trailblazers for longer, organised Saturday walks. These excursions cover scenic routes such as the Umkomaas Beach to Scottburgh route, coastal farmland trails, and forest reserves like Crocworld Conservation Centre and Umdoni.
