{pp}The Tertiary School in Business Administration – TSiBA- based in Pinelands has embarked on a green drive. The Business School's ethos is based on the Pay it Forward philosophy, by "Pay it Forward" we are able to ensure that the full tuition scholarships afforded to our students are used to further the education and lives of the communities in which we live and the greater society of the Western Cape. We work to give those around us a boost.

“It was an easy decision to adopt a Green Pay it Forward initiative. We are very conscious of the impact that we make on the environment, thus we have actively taken on projects that would reduce TSiBA's carbon foot print, says Adri Marais- Academic Director who has initiated a paper and bottle recycling project. All the collected materials are then passed on to Oasis, a charity that sustains itself through recycling. To read more about Oasis http://www.oasisrecycling.co.za/

The Spekboom Poverty Alleviation project is the other green Pay it Forward program that the TSiBA community has taken on. After finding out about the amazing environmental benefits that the Spekboom offers. TSiBA decided to take it on as part of their Give 5 campaign. This campaign was borne out of TSiBA's five-year celebrations, which involved paying it forward to other organizations making change. The Spekboom is a succulent tree that has been found to have the ability to sequestrate CO2 emissions at an amazing rate. The Spekboom Poverty Alleviation project has created a process where cuttings of the tree are sold in containers made by unemployed communities.

TSiBA is appealing to friends, sponsors and families to support the project by buying a cutting in a handmade pot for R100-00, so not only do you help the environment but also buying one, you help someone put food on the table for their families. More information on this project can be found on www.spekboom.com. The pots and plants can be purchased from the Starke Ayres Garden Centre on Liesbeek Parkway. All the students and staff received a Spekboom cutting to plant at their homes.

TSiBA has taken to affectionately calling it the Pay it Forward tree! The other greening scheme is the Peer Education Garden project in partnership with Strodels Nurseries. Strodels is teaching a gardening course over (3) three modules as a gift to TSiBA peer educators, who will then plant a vegetable garden on campus with sponsored compost, a wheelbarrow and gardening implements, from the nursery. The 'gardening clubbers will be planting gardens at their homes with on going support from the Strudels team.

We are extremely excited with all these green initiatives taking place at our institution and we are committed to “Pay it Forward” to the environment, says Leigh Meinert, Managing Director at TSiBA.
