South African Surfing Team to Compete in La Coupe de Surf Francophonie and Ocean Indien Challenge on Réunion Island
Submitted by: Craig JarvisLa Réunion – The Coup De Surf Francophonie and Ocean Indien Challenge on Réunion Island brings together surfers from the Indian Ocean region, uniting participants from countries such as India, South Africa, Mauritius, and French-speaking nations like Senegal, Tahiti, and Nouvelle-Aquitaine (France).
The event, taking place from 16 - 24 November 2024, will feature the South African team, including Anastasia Venter (JBay), Zoe Steyn (EL), Lorenzo Perels (JBay), and Daniel Emslie (EL). The team is led by coach Liam Wood and managed by Danielle Powis.
Originally a regional competition, the Elio Surf Challenge, organised by the Saint-Leu Surf Club, has evolved into an international platform, now known as La Coupe de Surf Francophonie and Océan Indien. This transformation was made possible by the Union of Indian Ocean Surf Federations (UFSOI), which fosters collaboration among the region's surf federations to strengthen the unity of the Indian Ocean surfing community.
The Event Features Three Major Contests
- Indian Ocean Cup: A tournament between South Africa, India, Mauritius, and Réunion Island.
- Francophonie Cup: A tournament featuring Senegal, Tahiti, Aquitaine (France), Mauritius, and Réunion Island.
- International Cup: A final contest that gathers all participants from the other cups.
The final weekend will mark the 40th anniversary of the Réunion Island Surfing League, celebrating the legacy of surfing on the island.
Safety Measures
The Shark Lookout Program and Water Patrol will provide comprehensive safety during the event, ensuring the well-being of all participants. Surfing sessions will be closely monitored to maintain the highest safety standards.
Venues
Surfing on Réunion Island is limited to designated and secure areas. The best competition venue will be selected each morning to maximise the chances of scoring optimal waves. Some of the potential locations include:
- Les Zaigrets: A short and intense A-frame peak, with a better right-hander.
- Les Brisants, DLD: A left-hand reef break with multiple peaks offering barrels and turn sections.
- L'Hermitage: A world-class reef-pass with powerful barrels breaking over a shallow reef.
- Trois-Bassins: A fun left-hander offering good performance opportunities.
