Scottie’s Granny Grommets Show the Community Camaraderie of Renishaw Hills

This past May, Yvonne Klopper (78), a resident of Renishaw Hills, and her friend Jewels Blackbeard joined the Nahoon Granny Grommets while caravanning near East London. Inspired by the experience, Yvonne brought the concept home, founding Scottie’s Granny Grommets in Scottburgh. The initiative has quickly gained popularity among local seniors who are embracing the waves together.
“My lifelong love of the ocean motivated me to encourage other grannies to embrace the waves,” said Yvonne, who has lived at the Renishaw Hills mature lifestyle estate for seven years. “What started with just me and six spectators has grown to 16 enthusiastic participants, with new members joining weekly.”
A Fun and Safe Seaside Initiative
Scottie’s Granny Grommets meet every Thursday at 9am at Scottburgh Main Beach, where they use bodyboards hired for R20 per session from the Scottburgh Lifesavers. Safety awareness talks are provided to ensure participants understand water safety, and the group only surfs within the bathing area monitored by lifeguards.
Scottburgh Main Beach, recently awarded pilot Blue Flag status for 2024/2025, is one of many KZN South Coast Blue Flag beaches. The beach is maintained by Keep Scottburgh Beautiful, offering cleanliness, security, and family-friendly amenities.
Building Community Through Waves
“This is not a club but a gathering of ladies who share a love for the ocean,” Yvonne explained. “Some of us are completely new to bodyboarding, while others haven’t surfed in decades. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy the outdoors, get some exercise, and meet like-minded people.”
Yvonne and her husband, Alfie, are active participants in the Renishaw Hills community, enjoying activities such as hiking, bowling, Bible study, and floral art. The secure, pet-friendly estate has allowed them to connect with fellow retirees who share their zest for life.
Barto van der Merwe, Managing Director of Renishaw Property Developments, praised the Granny Grommets:
