How the increase in average wages can stall the interest rate’s current decline

Published: 12 December 2017

Economists use a lot of models, measures and statistics to predict interest rate movements. Using job data, and more specifically average salaries across South Africa, one can try to preempt whether the reserve bank will increase, lower, or leave the interest rate intact.

A lot has been said over the past few months about how the interest rate is bound to decline by January 2018, but with the continuous rise in average salaries that Adzuna, an online job aggregator picked up, that decline might well be stalled.

When people have more disposable income (when salaries are increasing), buying behavior increases, which in turn drives prices up and increases inflation. When salaries drop, consumers are left with less disposable income, which leads to a decrease in buying, a drop in prices, and a decrease in inflation. Since the average salary has been rising over the past few months (which few people saw coming), it only seems logical to argue that an interest rate decline will not occur, and that it may very well do the opposite under the pressures of the reserve bank.

Adzuna tracked movements in the average salary for over 140,000 online jobs. These indicators gave them a general idea of the average household income, which could impact inflation. Not all jobs are posted online, which could impact projections.

But while Adzuna lists over 140,000 mainly white collar vacancies, BankservAfrica’s Disposable Salaries Index (BDSI), which includes earnings from different sources, also revealed that despite South Africa’s ‘junk’ status, salaries are growing at the fastest rate since 2015. In July, the average recorded salary was at R14,154, which is a steady increase from the R13,894 it was on in June 2017. The report also indicated that average salaries were increasing faster than the rate of inflation, for five months in a row.

What this means is that although some people might predict a decline in the interest rate (compared to the 6% it was on earlier in 2017) average salaries are still increasing. As you can see from this graph, average salaries are increasing, even for jobs that aren’t advertised online. According to the latest data, South Africa saw a rise in consumer prices which was 4.8 percent higher year-on-year in October 2017.

That figure matched market consensus and eased from a 5.1 percent increase in September.

As far as Adzuna’s predictions for the next Reserve Bank decision go, it points to a future rise in inflation, unlike what many predictors out there are saying. There might be a lot of other factors which could impact the movement of the interest rate, but job and salary data aren’t currently indicating a drop.

If anything, inflation rates in South Africa will be on hold until at least after the February budget. When you take Adzuna and BankServ’s data into account over twelve months, the figures might not indicate a definite increase in inflation, but as long as average salaries keep rising, inflation is bound to move upward and interest rates downward. Thus, in closing, it will be surprising to see the interest rate drop over December or early 2018, and it is more likely to see it remain stable.

Die Walkure Live with Neil Atlantis and the maturation of SA Hip Hop

Media, music lovers and everyone on the cutting-edge of the alternative artistry that Africa has to offer, are all invited to join the listening session of Die Walkure by Neil Atlantis. This journey into another era of South African hip hop takes place on Thursday, 23 September 2017 at the Market Theatre’s Market Lab in Newtown, Johannesburg.

South Africa’s seasoned hip hop artist and spoken word veteran, Neil Atlantis has invested the past seven years into crafting his latest work that can be engaged with in its entirety on 23 September in Johannesburg. Die Walkure is a hip hop and spoken word album that is steeped in story, fresh acoustic sound and the depth that can only be found in a live band that spends hours working to perfect their art.

The official video of Die Walkure is available on YouTube: http://bit.ly/NA-DW

Neil Atlantis made his indelible mark on the local hip hop scene with the release of his debut album titled Magic In My Mouth with his then stage name, Blindfold. Released in 2007, Magic In My Mouth generated commentary on the state of the local industry as well as the value of underground hip hop getting mainstream airplay. In his latest album, Die Walkure which Neil created as a take on the Norse Mythology of female figures who were said to decide which soldiers lived or not in the battlefield. He takes the listener through a multi-sensory journey with the craftsmanship of a mature artist with a team of equally seasoned instrumentalists, whom he handpicked and built a unique sound with.

When listening to the sound of Neil Atlantis and the band you get a sense that he competes and thinks at a global level, not just as a local artist. He believes that hip hop, although there are nuances by locality, is a culture that in itself has a global outlook and should reach out beyond the artist. “In essence, we strip the culture of its true nature by referring to it as South African hip hop, when we never say American or European hip hop” says Atlantis.

“The results to date speak for themselves”

Spintelligent MD David Ashdown says "Exhibition and conference revenues are up year-on-year and attendee numbers are growing exponentially. The demand for face-to-face events as a platform to share knowledge and facilitate trade is increasing and proven to provide African buyers and sellers an improved ROI over traditional marketing medium."

“Winning four major AAXO event industry awards at the beginning of 2017 was immensely rewarding but it has also inspired us to work even harder and not rest on our laurels and the results to date speak for themselves,” says Spintelligent MD David Ashdown. He adds: “I am very proud of my team for their effort and commitment and am confident that the rest of the year will be as fulfilling and successful.”

  • Education
Most recently, the 11th edition of Eduweek took place at the Gallagher Estate in Johannesburg from 12-13 July and gathered 3,738 attendees over two days, 90 expert speakers and 161 exhibitors.

  • Mining
DRC Mining Week in Lubumbashi, DRC in June showed an astounding 67% growth with 2,691 attendees from 32 countries over three days with 131 exhibitors.

  • Power & Energy
In May, Cape Town’s CTICC once again hosted African Utility Week and this year also did not disappoint. The 17th edition of the event welcomed 7,477 attendees from 91 countries who attended the three-day event – this was up from 6,445 attendees last year. The expo featured more than 300 exhibitors from 11 different countries and 284 expert speakers and 66 utilities from 20 African countries were represented.

  • Agriculture
Agritech Expo Zambia in Chisamba in April featured a record number of more than 18,000 visitors, seven international pavilions and a VIP attendance that included five cabinet ministers and the Zambian President Edgar Lungu who visited the event for the third year in a row.

  • Real Estate
Spintelligent also launched its first Property Buyer Show in Cape Town in April, a unique exhibition aimed at first-time residential buyers or property investors, which drew some 3,100 visitors. Spintelligent’s Publishing division has also been very busy so far this year.

Says David Ashdown: “besides never missing a day to deliver daily headline news, we have published 14 editions of our long-running, leading trade publications ESI-Africa, Mining Review Africa, Metering & Smart Energy International and look forward to another 12 content-rich editions until the New Year.”

He continues: “our prestige publications are boasting a new layout, the African Power Elites 2018 has achieved new heights by doubling incoming nominations in comparison to 2017, whilst for the first time, our African Mining Elites 2018 opens the door to new and exciting awards, highlighting excellence in the mining industry. Our Global Smart Energy Elites 2018, featuring the latest insights into the global leaders of the international smart energy network, is due to be released in October.”

Africa, a continental approach
“Spintelligent has a busy five months ahead,” says MD David Ashdown, “particularly rolling out our new Future Energy franchise of energy conferences and exhibitions across Africa” and in the process renaming some of Africa’s most iconic regional power events in East, West and Central Africa, including EAPIC and WAPIC, reflecting the optimism and potential of the energy and power sectors on the continent.”

He adds: “Africa continues to show economic development and growth, and we look forward to continuing to realise our potential and, while growing our key sector portfolios organically, our strategic path also includes being open to partnership and acquisition opportunities.”

You Need Real Grit to Win the 2017 Oakley X-Over

Published: 31 July 2017

Just days after announcing their title sponsorship of the Colin Mayer Tour mountain bike stage race in Mauritius in October, Grit Real Estate Income Group (GRIT) announced its sponsorship of the 4th annual Oakley X-Over event, powered by Sharp, cementing the GRIT brand firmly within the family sporting community in Mauritius and South Africa. The popular, 2-day Oakley X-Over sports-celebrity event took place 20-21 July as part of the J-Bay Winterfest and comprised three vastly different disciplines – a 15km mountain bike race, a surfing contest, and 9-holes of golf.

This year’s sporting celebrities was a star-studded list of Who’s Who in Sport – Jean De Villiers, Dale Steyn, Greg Minnaar, John Smit, Jordy Smith, Ryan Sandes, Garreth McLellan, Giniel De Villiers, Raynard Tissink, Ruan de Smidt, Lance Isaacs, Nick de Wit, Kerim Fitzgerald, Butch James, Seabelo Senatla, Tonderai Chavhanga, Australian wildcard, Tom Whitaker, and radio and TV personality, Ryan O’Connor.         In the mountain bike race, multiple Downhill Mountain Bike World Champ, Greg Minnaar, rode into the lead to stay ahead of last year’s overall winner, Raynard Tissink, with Giniel De Villiers finishing third.

The surf event held at Kitchen Windows was unsurprisingly won by Australian surfer, Tom Whitaker. He put on an innovative display in the Kitchen Windows surf, defeating Dale Steyn and Greg Minnaar, who finished second and third respectively. In the last event, the X-Over Golf Tournament at the Links Golf Course, South African golfer, Ruan De Smidt, took the win ahead of Butch James and Garreth McLellan, aka Soldier Boy, MMA’s favourite champion. Once the final tally was calculated, Greg Minnaar was crowned the overall winner of the 2017 Oakley X-Over. The competition runner-up was former South African rugby player, Butch James, and third place went to ex-Springbok captain, John Smit.

Said GRIT Director, and former pro-surfer, Greg Pearson, “This brand association was perfect for GRIT. Here were the toughest sporting individuals in the world taking on each other in disciplines other than their own, and fighting to the end. Similarly, as a company, we compete in the toughest industry and go to war every day for our clients, challenging beliefs on what is possible, proving it’s not what you do that counts but who you are that makes the difference. And we are the best. It takes guts, resilience, initiative and tenacity to succeed – real grit!” Recently, Grit Real Estate Income Group rebranded from Mara Delta to better reflect the current and future growth ambitions of the Company.

The new brand positioning captures the Group’s entrepreneurial and determined spirit, and its ambitions for growth in Africa while entrenching international appeal and stature. Grit has experienced substantial growth over the last few years, having recently paid its sixth consecutive distribution and has set even bolder growth ambitions for the near future, including listing on the London Stock Exchange. “The Oakley X-Over Celebrity Challenge strongly aligns with our motto of ‘work hard and play hard’ and we are very excited to be associated with the event,” comments Pearson. The J-Bay Winterfest took place from 12-23 July, and comprises the Oakley X-Over, the Corona Open J-Bay World Surf League Championship Tour event, the J-Bay Loggers Classic surf contest, the Endurade J-BayX Trail Run, the J-Bay Wind Farm MTB Classic, the Coldwater Classic open-water swim, fishing, kite festival, motocross and more.

About Grit Real Estate Income Group Grit is the largest and only pan-African focused real estate income group listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and the Stock Exchange of Mauritius.  The Company focuses exclusively on real estate assets on the continent (excluding South Africa), underpinned by US Dollar and Euro denominated long-term leases with high quality tenants, delivering strong sustainable income.

Grit manages in excess of US$ 600 million worth of assets (post transfer of current acquisitions) with access to numerous acquisition opportunities. These include a strong pipeline of quality assets in Mauritius, Zambia, Kenya, Uganda, Mozambique, Morocco and others.  The Company’s immediate strategy is to consolidate opportunities within current countries of operation before expanding into other geographies.
