Must-see production addresses the crisis of youth addiction in South Africa – now open to the public

For the past decade, NPO 60 Minutes in partnership with The Cedars have visited South African schools with a roadshow production that highlights the dangers of substance abuse. In celebration of its 10-year anniversary, the team is inviting the public to a one-time showing of their musical theatre production Good vs Evil: The Fight Against Substance Abuse taking place on Saturday, 22 July at Umkomaas Primary School from 2pm to 4pm.
This annual roadshow empowers and educates South Africans about the dire consequences of drug abuse and the importance of guarding against systematic poverty. This high-level production is also reflective of real-world experiences as The Cedars in-patients are invited to participate in the play.
This year’s production, Good vs Evil: The Fight Against Substance Abuse follows the experiences of a school-goer who experimented with drugs or alcohol, went through addiction and loss, and found recovery. It’s an impactful message in a country where drug abuse among the youth is on the rise, with the age of drug-addicted children falling each year.
“We have decided to stage our final rehearsal for the public so that people who would not otherwise get to see the play – but really need to hear the message – have a chance,” explained Stellio Coutsides of the Cedars Treatment Centre, a boutique group of addiction and mental health treatment facilities.
“It is targeted to those who want to reach loved ones who might be experimenting with addictive substances, for people who are currently experimenting, addicts in recovery, people dealing with addiction, teachers who may have learners experimenting and wish to understand what is going on in their minds during this time, and anyone and everyone who wishes to understand the disease of addiction.”
Brighton Hlatshwayo from 60 Minutes said Good vs Evil: The Fight Against Substance Abuse will offer important insight into what addiction is, the early signs to look out for, and how to cope with addiction for both sufferers and their loved ones. The show will also offer much-needed guidance for finding help when it’s needed.
“This is a special event as it is a celebration of our 10th anniversary. In addition to the jam-packed education, guidance, and usual entertainment we will take a moment to reflect on the past 10 years, talking to those whose lives have been touched and impacted by the production.”
