Chad Jones Discovers the Hidden Treasures of Antalya on the Hunt for the Next Tropika Island Paradise
Written by: The Platinum Club Save to Instapaper
The search for the ultimate island destination continues this week on Tropika Island Search, as former contestant and popular content creator Chad Jones and host Zanele Potelwa touch down in the breathtaking coastal city of Antalya, Turkey.
The show, a globe-trotting extension of Tropika Island Of Treasure, sees past celebrity contestants explore some of the world’s most spectacular destinations, all in the search to find the perfect location for the highly anticipated 12th season of the show.
While Turkey might not be the first name on a traditional island list, Chad and Zanele discovered that Antalya offers a beautiful backdrop that rivals the world’s most famous archipelagos.
As he returns from the Antalya, Chad opens up about why Turkey is a heavyweight contender as the perfect destination for the next season of Tropika Island Of treasure.
First Impressions of Antalya
First impressions always count. What surprised you most about Antalya when you arrived?
What surprised me most about Antalya was how picturesque and beautiful it is. I didn’t expect it! Much like our mountains back home, it almost looks like a painted backdrop surrounding you. What also surprised me was how rich in culture it is, and how proud the people are of their history and heritage.
Antalya’s Island Feel
When one thinks island paradise, Turkey isn’t a destination that comes to mind. Tell us a little bit more about Antalya’s island feel.
I can definitely say now that Turkey is up there for me when it comes to that island feel and paradise. Wow! The beaches are spotless and the water is crystal clear. What makes it even better is that the water temperature is perfect. They’re not too cold and not too warm. There are also hidden caves and surrounding islands with fascinating history, which makes it even more special.
A Blend of Beach and History
Antalya is known for its mix of beach and history. How did that contrast shape your experience?
The history on these islands is what intrigued me the most. There’s one small island where, right in the centre, there’s a freshwater spring – even though it’s surrounded by saltwater, which is unbelievable. Back in the day, travellers would stop there for drinking water. It was hard to believe until our guide took us there and we tasted it ourselves. My word, it was the best water I’ve ever had.
A 24-Hour Antalya Itinerary
If you had 24 hours to help a friend truly experience Antalya, what would your itinerary look like?
First, we’d fill our bellies with doner kebabs. Then we’d walk it off by visiting the Old Town and exploring the beautiful ruins, before ending the day with a sunset cruise where we’d swim in the ocean while a chef prepares fresh fish onboard.
Food and Culinary Experiences
You’re a massive foodie as well! Tell us a little bit about the food you ate on the trip.
Being in Turkey, my mind was set on one thing: doner kebabs! I’m literally obsessed. But beyond that, we were treated to incredible seafood lunches on the boats, prepared by locals. After this trip, Turkish food definitely ranks in my top five cuisines.
Favourite Travel Destinations
You’re an avid traveller. Besides Turkey, what have been some of your favourite destinations?
That’s true! I love to travel and I’ve been lucky to visit some incredible places. Some of my favourites, besides Turkey, would be China, Greece, Spain and Mozambique.
Why Antalya Is a Strong Contender
Why do you think Antalya is the perfect setting for the next season of Tropika Island Of Treasure?
I think Antalya is the perfect setting because of its incredible beaches. I can already imagine amazing water challenges along the shoreline, combined with puzzle challenges inspired by the city’s rich history. Running through ancient ruins would feel like being in a movie. It’s visually stunning. Antalya really has it all.
Chad’s Experience on Tropika Island Of Treasure
Tell us a little bit about your experience as a contestant on Tropika Island Of Treasure last season.
I can confidently say that, although short-lived, it was one of the best experiences of my life. Travelling to another country, experiencing new cultures and competing for R1 million is something truly special. I also made great friendships with fellow contestants and celebrities, some of whom I still see today. The experience really pushed me out of my comfort zone because I’m just a TikTok boy who tries to dance!
Advice for New Contestants
Auditions for the new season are now open. What advice do you have for contestants wanting to stand out?
Firstly, be yourself. Don’t be afraid to show your personality! Yes, physical ability matters and you should show that in your entry video, but from my experience, you also want someone with charisma, energy and a bit of a competitive edge, someone you can enjoy the journey with.
Auditions for Season 12 Now Open
While the search for the perfect island destination begins, Tropika is also looking for eight smoooth members of the public to join the season 12 celebrities on the island.
Think you have what it takes to compete?
