House Music Titan Kyle Watson Returns Home to Light Up the Main Stage at ULTRA South Africa
Written by: The Platinum Club Save to Instapaper
As ULTRA South Africa 2026 prepares to ignite the continent’s electronic music scene, one of its most successful exports is returning home. Kyle Watson, the producer whose "chunky, hypnotic" sound has become a staple in global house music, has officially confirmed a high-octane set for the Johannesburg Main Stage, a milestone moment in a career that began on South African soil.
Now based in the UK and recognised as one of the most exciting names in international house music, Watson has spent the past decade building a formidable reputation on global dance floors. From club residencies and festival stages to chart-topping releases, his music has resonated with fans around the world – yet returning to South Africa to perform remains a moment that holds special meaning.
A Homecoming To One Of South Africa’s Biggest Stages
With just over a month to go before ULTRA South Africa descends on the country, Kyle opens up about being invited back to perform on the festival’s main stage, his new single with Julia Church and more.
You’ve built a strong international reputation in the house music scene. How would you describe your journey from South Africa to performing on global stages? It’s been a ride! There have been plenty of ups and downs but I feel pretty lucky that I’m one of the artists that got the opportunity to take my music to the world. In this industry talent and hard work can get you so far but there’s definitely an element of ‘right place right time’ for things to pop off, and for me it all just lined up really well to give me my break.
ULTRA South Africa is one of the biggest electronic music festivals in the country. What does it mean to you personally to perform on that stage?I live in the UK now, and honestly it’s one of the biggest honours getting invited back to the country I grew up in to play the main stage at ULTRA. I have played a few of the other stages over the years, but to get the call up for main stage feels pretty good.
Your sound has become instantly recognisable in the house music world. How would you describe the signature “Kyle Watson sound”?You’ll recognise a Kyle Watson track through its tough, chunky basslines and hypnotic vocals. There’s also always a groovy, dark, energetic sound to my music as well.
New Music, Fresh Energy And What Fans Can Expect
You are a firm-favourite on the ULTRA South Africa stage. How do you keep it fresh year on year, always giving fans something new and exciting?I try to stay true to my sound but at the same time incorporate elements of the evolving scene. I’ll flip some of my older records to give them a new direction, and I constantly make edits for my sets that no one else has.
You dropped your new single ‘Dark Side’ with Julia Church recently. Tell us a little bit more about that track.Julia and I have been in contact on and off for ten years so it feels good to finally get on a single together! It’s a house roller with a garage-inspired bassline. Julia’s vocals are the anchor and honestly do most of the hard work.
Can fans expect any unreleased music or special edits in your ULTRA South Africa set this year?I’m sitting on a lot of unreleased music right now so definitely yes. I also have some upcoming releases from my label No Context Records to test out which I am excited about.
You’ve collaborated with a range of artists over the years. Are there any dream collaborations you’d still like to make happen?Something with Chris Lake would be great to lock in. Chris Lorenzo too. They’re both such good producers and I would love to work together.
Electronic music is constantly evolving. How do you stay inspired and continue pushing your sound forward?I listen to a ton of music. Not only dance music but other genres too. I also love watching music documentaries, I learn new synths, and I try to spend a bit of time in the studio every day.
For fans seeing you live at Ultra South Africa, what kind of energy and experience are you hoping to deliver on stage?I have got to keep the energy high on a main stage like this, so that’s what I’ll be aiming for. I am planning on dropping a lot of my own edits, some of my tracks people would expect and a few surprises. I am so ready!
