New wheelchair brings hope and mobility to young Tsakane resident

Sipho Mkhwanazi, a 19-year-old Tsakane resident, was in urgent need of medical and social assistance following a series of health challenges that left him severely disabled. Since birth, Sipho has not been able to walk or use his hands effectively, making him fully dependent on others for basic daily needs such as feeding and mobility. Earlier this year, his condition worsened when he developed epilepsy, a condition that causes recurrent seizures.
During one of these epileptic episodes, he suffered a serious fall resulting in a dislocated hip bone. Unfortunately, despite being taken to the hospital for treatment, medical staff were unable to successfully reposition the hip, leaving him in ongoing pain and further restricting his mobility.
Sipho’s mother, Mbali Mkhwanazi, who works for Masana Cleaning Company, which is contracted to Carnival City, was deeply concerned about his deteriorating health. She appealed for medical intervention, assistive devices, and continued care to improve his quality of life.
The Sun Carnival City Community Trust responded to the family’s call for help.
“I was so happy when I received the wheelchair from the Sun Carnival City Community Trust, which costs more than R20 000, which we would never be able to afford. May the Lord bless them for the good they have done for my son. It will make things much easier for me when taking Sipho to the clinic and for his check-ups,” said Mkhwanazi.
“After hearing the touching story shared by the boy’s mother, we identified the need and was honoured to be part of the team that stepped in to help when it mattered most,” says Abbey Witbooi, Sun Carnival City Community Trust trustee.
