Eight malls, two titles, one national champion and a R350,000 prize pool.
Do you have what it takes? Whether you are a seasoned competitor or picking up a controller in a tournament setting for the first time, the MTN SHIFT Gaming Experience 2026 has a place for you. Now in its fourth year, the series presented by Hyprop in partnership with MTN rolls out across eight shopping centres nationwide from April through to August, building to National Finals at Canal Walk in August with a total prize pool of R350,000 on the line.
A Nationwide Esports Experience
The competition centres on two titles: EA FC 26™, the flagship football simulation that needs little introduction to South African gamers, and Beat Saber, the adrenaline-fuelled VR rhythm game. Each mall stop hosts an online qualifier followed by a three-day in-centre event, giving players multiple entry routes into the competition regardless of where they are in the country.
“SHIFT has grown into something that genuinely reflects the diversity of South Africa’s gaming community,” said Christie Stanbridge, Brand and Campaigns Marketing Manager at Hyprop. “What makes this series special is that it meets players where they already are - in the malls they visit every week - and gives them a real chance to compete, connect and win. We want as many people as possible to come and be part of it, whether they are serious competitors or simply curious about what competitive gaming looks like up close.”
Tour Schedule Across South Africa
The touring schedule opened at Rosebank Mall, with an online qualifier on 19 April and the in-centre event running from 24 to 26 April. It then travels to Somerset Mall in Cape Town (15-17 May), Woodlands in Pretoria (12-14 June), The Glen in Johannesburg (26-28 June), Table Bay Mall in Cape Town (10-12 July), Clearwater in Johannesburg (31 July - 2 August) and Capegate in Cape Town (14-16 August), before the final mall qualifier and National Finals take place at Canal Walk from 26 to 30 August.
The tournament management is handled by ACGL, one of South Africa's most respected esports organisers.
The Main Event EA FC 26™
The EA FC 26™ Mall Tournament runs across 12 heats each weekend, with the top two from each heat advancing to the Mall Final on Sunday. The four highest performers from the preceding online qualifier also earn a direct place in that final.
The Mall Final winner progresses to the National Football Final on 30 August, where qualifiers from across the country will compete for a prize pool of R50,000. A finalist from external competition ACGL will also claim a spot, alongside defending champion Hamza Moosa, who qualifies automatically to defend his title.
Mall finalists take home Hyprop gift cards worth R2,500, R1,500 and R1,000 for first, second and third place.
Feel the Beat with MTN’s Beat Saber Challenge
The Beat Saber competition, hosted by MTN on its Battle+ esports platform, follows a parallel structure. The player recording the highest score across the three-day mall event qualifies for the Beat Saber National Final on 20 September, where a further R50,000 prize pool is split across the top four finishers.
“MTN is committed to connecting South Africans to the things they love, and gaming is one of the fastest-growing passions in the country,” said Muyiwa Ladipo, Chief Consumer Officer Consumer Prepaid at MTN South Africa. “Through the Beat Saber competition and the Battle+ platform, we’re giving gamers a chance to compete, connect, and win in ways that go far beyond the screen. We’re excited to see who emerges at the top this year.”
More Ways to Play
Beyond the headline tournaments, each mall event features a Fighting Cup spanning three titles: Brawlhalla on Friday, Tekken on Saturday and Street Fighter 6 on Sunday - with R1,000 and R500 mall gift cards for the top two finishers each day.
A PC Gaming Zone, free play stations and a Keyboard Rebuild Race round out the experience, ensuring there is something on offer for every gamer who walks through the doors, whether competing or spectating.
