Digital Marketing in South Africa

As its name implies is really marketing on the Internet space and not so much marketing as advertising. People also call it New Media which maybe a cool term but is pretty much baloney.

The Internet gets information from the web and search engines use that information to promote a website the intrinsic value of a website that is popular is the underlying goal.

Whatever you publish stays on the web forever and contributes as a resource for current and future generations to see.

If you look at established media such as television, magazines, newspapers or radio these do not have historical resources of information other than what is currently being published. You are able to view an old tv programme or view an old published magazine but they are not available to you as resources of information like the WWW is.

They are not in front of you to search on.The overarching reason why the Internet exists and what it was created for is the sole reason of accessing current or historical but relevant information worldwide.

People have accepted the word Marketing as meaning Advertising which is fine but these organisations mean to PUSH advertising down your throat no matter how well-meaning what they do is SPAM you with their messages because that is how they make a living and that is not what the WWW was designed for it has basically been hijacked.

There is no difference between receiving unwanted messages in your email than having to view advertising billboards on the web.

Traditional agencies think that because the advertising is paid for then it is justifiable. This is not so whether free or paid for it is all just SPAM to consumers.

People worldwide use the web for banking and other services which are really great. As an example I was able to renew my passport on the web and there are a host of other really great services such as medical aid and certain government services. This useful type of technology I would put down to innovation and is of great assistance and time saving for consumers using the web. No part of this has an advertising component.

Even finding these websites that will assist me I can find by searching on the web search engines this is where I get information from.

The old argument with regard to advertising is that it helps to keep the costs down for consumers who buy newspapers, magazines, and on radio and television. The Internet does not require advertising for its income it exists despite advertising. Where is the justification for advertising on the web?

The Internet is an information resource and when I navigate it I find an interesting article using the search engines which may lead me to another article of interest and so on.The only marketing required on the World Wide Web is from search engine optimisation companies who aid and assist people to find the resources and information they are looking for.

Agencies need to promote their clients websites which in turn needs to display relevant and interesting content. The only way to promote the client’s website is by getting natural ranking on the search engines. SEO is what they should be doing for their clients. Website owners will then know that anyone reading the web page wants to be there and not just clicking on an advertisement for the sake of it. The old adage of 50% of advertising gets wasted but knowing which 50% does not apply to a website that someone is visiting by a voluntary action they have taken while looking for information.
