Developers Note Shift on the KZN South Coast as Buyers Seek High-Value Properties

The KZN South Coast property market is attracting a new wave of high-value buyers, with premium homes in Renishaw Hills’ mature lifestyle estate in Scottburgh selling rapidly following the launch of Phase 7.
Growing Investor Confidence In The KZN South Coast
Developers say this reflects growing investor confidence in the region, which is increasingly being recognised as a sought-after coastal property destination offering both lifestyle and long-term value.
“Historically, the KZN South Coast has been recognised as one of South Africa’s more affordable coastal investment destinations, but we’re now seeing buyers actively looking for premium property offerings and long-term value,” explained Barto van der Merwe, Managing Director of Renishaw Property Developments, a subsidiary of Crookes Brothers Limited.
“This signals strong confidence in the future of the KZN South Coast while highlighting the transformation taking place through developments such as the Renishaw Coastal Precinct.”
Two of the sought-after perimeter homes priced above R4 million sold shortly after the launch of Phase 7, with more than 50% of the phase already sold out and planning underway for Phase 8.
Van der Merwe said the mixed-use precinct’s long-term vision – including a future school, shopping centre, and new coastal farm-style residential estate – was further enhancing the area’s appeal to higher-end buyers and families seeking quality lifestyle investments.
“Our initial investors saw property values increase by 60%, a trajectory which has continued as the quality lifestyle offerings and incredible value for money are realised,” he said.
“We believe the positive investor sentiment has continued into the latest phase of Renishaw Hills.”
Demand For Premium Coastal Lifestyle And Space
Van der Merwe said buyer demographics are also revealing interesting trends:
“As expected, we continue to see strong interest from Gauteng buyers looking to retire at the coast, but what’s particularly interesting is the growing interest from the KZN North Coast.
Many buyers appear to be seeking a similar premium coastal lifestyle, but at a slower pace with less density than some of the busier coastal nodes.”
He said the precinct’s conservation-led approach was proving to be a major drawcard:
“Around 80% of the Renishaw Coastal Precinct will remain dedicated conservation space.
The ethos has always been to maximise natural open areas and avoid overdevelopment, allowing residents to genuinely enjoy the natural assets without feeling overcrowded.”
Premium Homes And Lifestyle Features
Among the most in-demand properties in Phase 7 are the spacious freestanding homes, particularly the perimeter properties offering partial sea views and enhanced privacy.
These premium 3-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom homes priced at R4 120 000 and feature two en-suite bathrooms, generous garden space, expansive verandahs, high ceilings, and large windows designed to maximise natural light and coastal airflow.
There has also been strong demand for the estate’s 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom freestanding homes, with prices starting from R3.69 million.
The remaining premium perimeter homes include sought-after lifestyle features such as SMEG appliances, Hansgrohe fittings, solar geysers, prepaid electricity meters, inverters, double garages, and installed fibre and WiFi connectivity.
Importantly for mature buyers, the homes have also been designed with future assisted-living considerations in mind.
A Conservation-Led Mature Lifestyle Estate
Set within the 1 300-hectare Renishaw Coastal Precinct in Scottburgh, Renishaw Hills offers residents access to extensive conservation areas, walking and cycling trails, over 20 active social clubs, healthcare options, water security, and a growing list of lifestyle amenities, including a bowls green currently under construction.
