Urology Hospital Performs Free Procedures for Public Hospital Patients this Mandela Month
Written by: WeRise WeRise Save to InstapaperCommemorating Mandela Day 2025, Urology Hospital doctors and staff are honouring Madiba’s legacy by giving back to the community in a meaningful way. From 14-18 July Urology Hospital doctors and staff will perform free procedures for public hospital patients who have been desperately waiting for access to this level of care. This marks the hospital’s third consecutive partnership with African Synergy Health (ASH) for the Mandela Week Surgical Marathon.
Now in its 15th year, International Mandela Day continues to serve as a global call to action inspired by Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of service to justice, freedom, equality, and human rights. It reminds us that even small acts of kindness can spark lasting change. Urology Hospital and African Synergy Health (ASH) are proudly answering that call by turning 67 minutes into lasting impact, partnering to uplift those in need and build a better, more just world—one meaningful act at a time.
“As prostate cancer remains the most diagnosed in South African men, we know many public hospital patients have been waiting a long time for the care they need,” says Dr Dirk Ligthelm of Urology Hospital, Africa’s only specialised urology centre of excellence. “Being able to help and offer life-changing treatment is something we’re incredibly proud to be part of.”
“Giving back to our community is deeply meaningful to us,” says Dr Francois Boezaart of Urology Hospital. “Our doctors are not only highly skilled but genuinely committed to making a difference. Celebrating Mandela’s legacy by using our expertise to provide treatment to South African men—who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer—this initiative is more than a gesture; it’s a critical intervention.”
As the first in South Africa to introduce the state-of-the-art da Vinci robotic system, 12 years of robotic surgery experience, Urology hospital combines world-class technology with unmatched skill to deliver life-changing outcomes for patients—driven by a future-focused vision and unwavering commitment to precision treatment.
Beyond this initiative, Urology Hospital has a strong heritage of giving back. Over the years, the hospital has partnered with and supported numerous NGO’s and remains committed to giving back. These partnerships and efforts go hand in hand with the hospital’s philosophy of – “We care about you” – and reinforces its mission in their role as the only Urology Centre of Excellence in Africa.
