Urology Hospital: Doctors collaborate with African Synergy Health to perform free robotic prostatectomies this Mandela Day

This Mandela Day, Urology Hospital (UH) in Pretoria will once again partner with African Synergy Health (ASH) for the ASH Mandela Week Surgical Marathon. From July 15-19, they’ll perform life saving surgeries using cutting-edge robotic surgery.

Prostate cancer is the most diagnosed in South African men and the fifth leading cause of death globally with black African men often presenting at more advanced stages. Incidence of prostate cancer has surged by 60% in the past 15 years and men risk higher mortality rates without timely treatment.

This year, the ASH program extends to hospitals in Gauteng (that have 38,000 patients on surgery waiting lists), KwaZulu-Natal, and Eastern Cape. This initiative helps address the critical backlog in public hospitals.

“Giving back to our community is important to us,” says acting CEO – Ingrid Gricius of Urology Hospital, a centre of excellence and South Africa's only specialised urology hospital and a tech leader in Africa. “Our team of doctors are highly skilled and eager to once again be a part of this great initiative with ASH and make a significant difference in people’s lives,” explained Gricius.

Dr Viola Morolo, Founder and director at African Synergy Health shared, “In alignment with Nelson Mandela's values of service and community upliftment, the ASH Mandela Week Surgical Marathon will conduct a wide spectrum of surgical procedures for public patients, including robot assisted radical prostatectomies. This program aims to perform 67 urological and general surgical procedures in each province, symbolising Mandela’s 67 years of public service. We are committed to achieving our vision of zero patients on elective surgical waiting lists in public hospitals.”

67 years Nelson Mandela spent advocating for justice, equality, and human rights for all. ASH and TUH lead the way in creating a healthcare system where resources are shared, and African health challenges are addressed.

Urology Hospital has a record of giving back, undertaking numerous Corporate Social Investment initiatives throughout the years including donating to The Clothing Bank, preparing food parcels for The Red Cross Society, providing uniforms to Sunnyside Primary School, donating stationery to Balebogeng Primary School, and gifting a Sunlift e175 Hydraulic Hoist to Joan Mary Care Centre for disabled youth in Pretoria.
