A refreshing spin on a Joburg roadblock with PURA SODA and SAPS

With holiday travel in full swing across the country, a routine morning drive in Johannesburg turned into an unexpected moment of refreshment for some motorists. Instead of bracing for the usual festive season roadblock tension, they were met with something far lighter: an ice-cold PURA SODA passed through the window.
A small moment of relief in what is often a stressful stop, made possible by PURA Beverage Co. in partnership with the South African Police Service (SAPS).
“I braced for the usual roadblock stress and then I got a cold drink instead. Only in Joburg!” said one motorist.
The activation was a collaboration between PURA Beverage Co. and SAPS Ekurhuleni District, aimed at easing festive-season anxiety. “As law enforcement, we see firsthand how busy and stressful this time of year can be,” says Major General Anna Sithole, Ekurhuleni District Commissioner. “Today was a chance to connect with motorists in a positive way and remind everyone that we’re here to keep them safe on the roads. A small moment of joy goes a long way.”
PURA Beverage Co. initiated the idea as part of its new brand ethos, recognising that in modern life, even everyday rituals can feel overwhelming. “Life is a lot. We all feel it – from the traffic to the to-do lists to the December rush,” says Greig Jansen, CEO of PURA Beverage Co. “Sometimes the smallest, simplest moments of refreshment can make a real difference. That’s what today was about: an honest cooldrink moment, shared with the people who needed it most.”
The brand’s intention was clear:
- Break the tension of a traditionally stressful moment
- Celebrate the power of small, human gestures
- Bring the new brand ethos to life, one can at a time
“From ‘Oh no…’ to ‘Oh wow, thanks!’ in five seconds flat,” laughed another motorist on their way to work.
Today’s activation marks the launch of PURA SODA’s refreshed brand platform: “Life doesn’t have to be a lot. JUST live a little PURA.”
It’s the first of many moments designed to help people pause, breathe, smile, and choose lighter living - even in the busiest time of the year.
