Tasché’s hit wins Virseker’s competition for a new Afrikaans birthday song – but Piesangskille remains a party favourite

In a remarkable celebration of Afrikaans’ 100th anniversary, Virseker – the only insurance product that operates entirely in Afrikaans – launched a unique and energetic nationwide competition to find a new Afrikaans birthday song. The campaign not only got the country singing, but also united thousands of South Africans in their love for language, culture, and music.
After a public voting process in which thousands participated, Tasché’s version of the birthday song was officially announced as the winner. Her rendition captivated audiences with a powerful voice, fresh rock-inspired sounds, and an authentic celebration of Afrikaans identity.
But the competition was by no means a one-horse race. Piesangskille, known for their unique style and playful musical approach, secured a strong second place and won many hearts with their cheerful, humorous version of the song. The response to both songs was overwhelmingly positive, and both have since built their own fan bases.
Morné Van Emmenes, Head of Marketing at Virseker, said:
“We wanted to celebrate the centenary of Afrikaans in a creative, inclusive way – and music was the perfect medium. What we heard wasn’t just talent, but also a genuine love for Afrikaans. Tasché received the most votes, but Piesangskille’s contribution was just as meaningful. Both songs are wonderful, and we encourage people to sing them at any Afrikaans celebration or birthday.”
The competition forms part of Virseker’s broader “Afrikaans 100” campaign, which includes several initiatives throughout 2025 – all celebrating a century of Afrikaans as a full-fledged, living language.
“Afrikaans is more than just a language – it’s part of our identity, our story, and our people,” Van Emmenes added. “This campaign is a way to bring that pride back into our soundtracks, our celebrations, and our future.”
Virseker thanks everyone who participated, every supporter who voted, and every Afrikaans voice that brought this project to life. The success of the birthday song competition shows that Afrikaans is alive and well – creative, inclusive, and full of energy.
Afrikaans has turned 100 – and the party has only just begun!
