Clock Ticking for Electronics Producers - ERA NPC Launches Major Campaign Against EPR Non-Compliance

The Ewaste Recycling Authority (ERA NPC) recently launched a major B2B compliance campaign, taking a proactive stance against non-compliance within the electronics sector.

The initiative, titled “Get Signed Up. Get Switched On.”, directly targets manufacturers, importers and sellers of electronic products who have yet to align with South Africa's Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) legislation.

Driven primarily through LinkedIn, the campaign aims to shift the narrative around e-waste regulation, demonstrating that non-compliance is no longer a distant risk but an active liability threatening everyday business operations.

Facing The Realities Of Non-Compliance

The multi-phased rollout utilises a strategic mix of thought-leadership videos, static content, digital advertising, targeted email communications and dedicated landing-page activity.

Rather than focusing solely on theoretical regulations, the campaign confronts producers with the real-world financial implications and legal consequences of staying off the grid.

Each phase of the campaign is designed to highlight specific risks that non-compliant businesses face, including:

  • Strict Audits and Penalties: Increased scrutiny from regulatory bodies.
  • Severe Legal Exposure: Potential prosecution and statutory fines.
  • Lost Business Opportunities: Market exclusion as supply chains increasingly demand fully compliant partners.

Ultimately, the initiative serves as a clear call to action for outstanding producers to register with ERA and formalise their e-waste management strategies.

A Message From The Leadership

Ashley du Plooy, Chief Executive Officer of ERA NPC, emphasises that the era of leniency is ending, and compliance must be viewed as an urgent business priority.

"For too long, EPR legislation has been viewed by some as a future hurdle or a minor administrative box to tick," says du Plooy. "The reality is that non-compliance is a present business liability. Through this campaign, we want to help businesses understand that getting compliant is not just about avoiding penalties or managing legal risks, though those are very real. It is about protecting your market position and ensuring your business is switched on to the future of the circular economy."

Du Plooy adds that the campaign is designed to support the industry through this transition rather than simply act as a warning.

"Our goal with 'Get Signed Up. Get Switched On.' is to provide a clear, accessible pathway for producers. We are here to guide companies through the registration process, helping them mitigate their risks and contribute meaningfully to South Africa's environmental and economic future."
